It played an important role in the defense of London during the V1 attacks, shooting down more than 300 flying bombs thank to his speed of more than 450 mph and the two 20 mm cannons. The engine was a RR Griffon with 1800 HP. The Spit XIV was also the first fighter to shotdown a ME 262 in aerial combat. This one seems to have been delivered for use in January '45, but sold off 14 months later, fortunately avoiding the re-cycling which so many others suffered, often straight from the production line. My favourite Spit is the Mk XXIV, substantially different from the original design. There is one flying around with a Griffon engine with contra-rotating props, quite a fast little bird. Did you know that there was a device designed for the Spitfire to capture V1's, turn them gently round and send them back?!! Luciano really knows how to photograph aircraft, so we tend to take this for granted, just as we do Doug Herr's wildlife shots. #1 really IS unusual whereas I like the angle of #2 a lot but would like more of the aircraft included.
