Hello there,

I am new to this Forum and new to Leica in general. My husband has been looking for a Leica R 6.2 and a set of different lenses for a long time now.

He is a Leica-Fan and hobby photograph. A very special birthday is arriving and hence i want to fullfill him this dream and get him a used R 6.2 and a whole set of lenses. He has written down exactly what he wants - but before I get that I wanted to ask around where and how to buy this best.

Anyone any idea how to start looking?

Regards and Thanks

Welcome to the forum!

Firstly, your husband is a lucky man ;)

Secondly, you are a lucky woman, because R lenses and cameras have never been such good value!

Whereabouts are you in the world?

All kinds of shops sell used Leica gear online. In Germany you need to look around, to find the best offer. shphoto, leicabeimeister, and several others offer a wide range of cameras, lenses, and alll kinds of conditions - typically overpriced (add 30%) compared to private auctions. With the dollar being really low, you should also consider buying in the US, shipping is not that expensive, but you need to add 19% tax/customs duties. Look at KEH, kurlandphoto (they also have an ebay shop), etc.. Also check out world wide ebay shops. Private auctions may be suspicious, but several shops online are trustworthy at reasonable prices - also use ebay to consider which offer is reasonable in which is overpriced. Especially the R6.2 is highly regarded and you pay the price for it even used.

does >>RLP<< mean: Rheinlandpfalz ?

From there it is not too far to MEISTER in Hamburg or Berlin. Google and try their websites: you will find a considerable amount of s/h LEICA- R- gear there.

And they have a generous returnpolicy, so that your husband could choose to send the items back if he desires.

Best

Wow - i am impressed how many responses i received so fast.

regarding the questions - i am from germany - we live close to Mainz and i have already looked at some stores that sell also used Leica equipment. I just got the impression that one has to overpay quite a bit there...

I like the idea of buying in the US at the moment with the strong euro. I will also look at ebay and the other links you gave me.

Many thanks so far...

Be careful to consider postage, tax/import duty if buying from the USA. Also the fact that you will have little/no comeback if the items aren't exactly as you had hoped for and the hassle of returning stuff even if you do have the opportunity or warranty.

In general I find equipment is never quite as good as it is described. Mint is really EXC, EXC is really good/used etc. I allow for this myself when buying from e bay - I occassionally have a nice surprise and receive something better than expected!

You should look at some of the UK dealers websites, R gear is very good value s/h at the moment.

If you are prepared to order from outside Germany, Ffordes in Scotland https://secure.ffordes.com/index.htm have three R6.2 bodies in stock at the moment, including a silver-chrome ex-demonstration unit for £799 (1025 Euros), which comes complete with a 2-year Leica passport guarantee. Look under 'used equipment' when you log onto their site. Since Scotland is part of the EU, you wouldn't have any problems with customs, and Ffordes prices include UK VAT (at 17.5%) so you are in the clear there as well.

Ffordes have a first class reputation - I've bought numerous items from them both over the counter and by mail order and can confirm that they are very reliable

Ffordes also have a very extensive selection of secondhand R lenses at reasonable prices

Cordiny,

not too far from Deutschland (Wien) there is a very good dealer of Leica equipment:

https://www.leicashop.com/vintage/leica-c-1000.html

Not a cheap shop, but very trustable, kind people you can speak with; I gave a quick look at the site: have a good number of Leica R lenses and some R6.2 bodies.

Compliments to your husband for his right choices both for camera & wife...:)

If you are interested in buying in the US, check out the Adorama website at:

Digital cameras, all other cameras and everything photographic from Adorama Camera

they list used equipment there.

If you don't see what you want (an R6.2) call and ask to speak to Efraim. They may be able to get it, or the website may not be upto date.

He is knowledgeable and fluent is several languages, including German. He can also explain how shipping to Europe works.

Aperture in London are having a sale of used Leica R lenses at the moment.

Aperture Photographic Tel. 020 7242 8681 Fax. 020 7242 8680

I know that David Stephens www.leicas.com has just taken in a load of R lenses, too. He's in Manchester, UK, so no worries about duty and VAT

C., this is probably way out of line, but here it goes. It maybe very useful for you husband to play lessinactive role in the process. Very good equipment is to be had in the US at very good prices. They can be shipped easily and insured using the USPS. I have bought several pieces from european dealers as well as shipped pieces to friends in Europe with no problems.. I suggest that he take an active role so that it will bring into focus the choices available and make him "buy in" to the choices. Good hunting.
