Guest Austerby Posted March 18, 2008 Share #1 Posted March 18, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) For what it's worth, on a recent ten week trip around six countries in SE Asia I spotted a number of other Leica camera users: 3 x c-lux (all used by young Asian women) 1 x d-lux (young Asian bloke) 1 x v-lux (young western bloke) 1 x M7 (middle-aged French bloke) 1 x M8 (middle-aged Asian bloke) 1 x Leicaflex SL (middle-aged western bloke) and I was using my MP and M7. I did however see vast numbers of Panasonic Lumix of various types (I also had one) which suggests to me that perhaps in terms of numbers of images, more photographs than at any previous point in time are being taken using Leica lenses. So, it's not all bad...

Guest rweisz Posted March 18, 2008 Share #2 Posted March 18, 2008 Does Leica really make those p&S lenses or do they just lend their name but there made by panasonic (or someone else altogether)? That said, if I go to SE Asia I will definately be on the lookout for Leicas...especially those c-Luxes being used by young Asian women
jaapv Posted March 18, 2008 Share #3 Posted March 18, 2008 I notice the French are neither Asian nor Western
marknorton Posted March 18, 2008 Share #4 Posted March 18, 2008 No, Leica does not make the lenses for the PanaLeica P&S cameras. There's some Leica IP in there, I've no doubt, the the lenses will be churned out by the truck load in China, probably.

earleygallery Posted March 18, 2008 Share #6 Posted March 18, 2008 Lenses designed by/in collaboration with Leica, made in Japan to Leica quality control standards, with Leica coatings, as I understand it. Rather like some R and CL lenses.

Thomas Edwards Posted March 19, 2008 Share #8 Posted March 19, 2008 ...would be great to get some market break-down information on leica sales by region and country (camera and sports optics)...recently saw the lens on the new lumix L10...had a decidedly "un-leica" look to it...perhaps this is the source of the current friction between leica and panasonic... Guest Austerby Posted March 20, 2008 Share #9 Posted March 20, 2008 And how many thousands of Canikons did you see?? Actually I thought the Panasonics outnumbered the little Nikons, though a lot of dSLRs - one aged chap had both a D3 and a D300 prominently brandished. Guest Joachim_I Posted March 20, 2008 Share #10 Posted March 20, 2008 one aged chap had both a D3 and a D300 prominently brandished. He is probably reporting in some Nikon forum that he saw a guy with Leica MP and Leica M7 around his neck
