M8 Sensor, Is This A Problem?

Hi guys,

Was just busy doing some digital darkroom stuff, mainly lifting shadows when I came upon this line. On the images that this appears, it is at the exact same position. Has anyone had this before? Is this a problem, or does this signify that something is about to go wrong?

Any ideas would be welcome.

Have had a closer look. This line appears at the exact same location on all images, regardless of which lens is mounted. Its beginning to look like a trip to Solms...

Had a similar problem last week. I had two lines, spaced equally apart, in a similar position to the one you have. Mine were bright green, however and occurred @ ISO 640. I'm crossing my fingers that it is an isolated incident.

Andreas,

I had the problem and a "circuit board" fix was in order. Like you, mine became more pronounced when using the Fill Light control (lifting the shadows) in ACR. Also, it is more pronounced at higher ISO and areas of underexposure.

 This is one defect I didn't know about. I haven't seen it but now it's one more thing I will have to be on guard for. Do you think since my M8 is in Solms for shutter replacement anyway I should ask them to check/replace that circuit board? Anybody know what it's called so Solms will know what I'm talking about (or is this issue one of the one's that they're not admitting)?

Anytime your camera--be it an M8 or any other--introduces artifacts like this, it's a problem that needs to be corrected. Green blobs, pink lines--none of it is right, and your friendly Leica dealer and Leica itself need to fix it in your case. Sorry, but all these flaws they we run into are getting a bit old and tiresome. I would be more tolerant if they were dealt with aggressively and successfully, but too many fixes so far for the M8 have been "band-aid" approaches--IR filters, firmware, etc. It gets old after a while. I love what the camera is capable of, and what it generally delivers, but for the price, I expect something closer to near perfection.

Hi all,

Thanks for all the comments. Seems like mine is a bit worse than most since this line is appearing in all images at ISO 160. I have not even tried the higher ISO ratings. Have sent an email to the Leica Agents here in South Africa and will be shipping the camera to them in the next two days or so.

While I really love using my M8 and have been extremely impressed with the results that I have gotten so far, I'm just a bit peeved that I'm going to be sitting without a camera for quite some time. The camera has to be fully exported through customs with all associated papers (repair and return basis). This means that a clearing and forwarding agent has to be made use of, airfreight costs, clearing on the other side etc. With my luck I'll be without a camera for probably 6 months.... Mind you, they can then fix the backfocus issue, do a CLA on my 21mm (and code it while it's there) and on the 135mm TE.

I'm probably not going to have much of a choice but to buy a Canon 40D to use in the mean time. Thank goodness I still have some of my Canon gear left over that has not been sold yet. Not what I was hoping to do, but I can not work with a camera that is giving trouble. With my luck it'll fail completely in just a critical moment.

Yep, well said. And anyone with knowledge of just what the real percentages are of having a problem are per 1000 units made - let me know !

Hello everybody,

I know this is an old thread, but since it came back from the dead...

Is it just me, or is that a horizontal line and not vertical? I thought the vertical line sensor problem was exactly in the middle, and went from top to bottom. This looks like a scratch on the sensor, but I'm just guessing. I know it's been awhile, maybe the OP could enlighten the curious ones what the problem really was.

I think it gets easy to point the finger at Leica for everything, even if some of the problem was the result of OE (Operator Error).

Just a thought...

That might well be the well known highlight green line, which is not a faulty sensor, but comparable to flare (not the same, I know...)

See Leica's M8 FAQ Sep 2008 item 4.3.
