Pitxu Posted April 12, 2008 Share #201 Posted April 12, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi all, I'm new here but have been following the situation on RFF with Bill who invited me here. I've spent the last 20 years in the Basque Country and experience none of the problems I hear about from the UK or elsewhere, but I do feel for you guys, so, I've been doing what I can. I sent a modified version of bill's letter "in support for my British photographer friends" to Boris and Ken,no replies, and Austin Mitchell. Austin's secretary wrote back: "Thank you for your email and the support you have shown for Austin Mitchell's recent EDM on photography in public places. Your address indicates that you aren't based in the UK, but please do encourage others to write to their MP asking them to support EDM 1155. Yours sincerely, Amy Hopkinson Research Assistant to Austin Mitchell MP" 020 7219 4450 hopkinsona@parliament.uk I would encourage all non Brits to do the same. If Austin Mitchell could stand up in parliament waving a pile of supporting emails not just from Brits but from all around the world...... Pitxu. earleygallery Posted April 12, 2008 Share #202 Posted April 12, 2008 Andy If you were a week later, and used an LTM camera, you would have been in the running for the next Barnack Challenge - Uniforms! (sorry for the plug). I sent 'my' MP and others the link to this thread so maybe just maybe they'll log on and see these. I doubt it though. Clearly the guy - who must have been one of several hundred in the area with a camera - is a suspect terrorist. Wearing black, darker skin, back pack....... Tell Austin that you won't come to visit, as you fear being arrested for being a tourist.

Pitxu Posted April 12, 2008 Share #209 Posted April 12, 2008 I read somewhere that Austin now has over 130 signatures for his EDM. There must be quite a few photog' MPs, Jessops have sponsored a photo cometition just for them: MPs’ photographs set new record in Jessops Parliamentary Photography Competition news - Amateur Photographer - news, camera reviews, lens reviews, camera equipment guides, photography courses, competitions, photography forums
spylaw4 Posted April 14, 2008 Share #210 Posted April 14, 2008 A new response received today: Dear Mr Parkes Thank you for your email of 31 March 08 in which you raise the issues of photography and policing in London. I am responding on behalf of my London Assembly Liberal Democrat colleagues Geoff Pope, Mike Tuffrey, Sally Hamwee and Dee Doocey. I sympathise with your concerns and have in fact received other letters and emails from constituents on this very matter. Whilst London (and the UK) is facing a very difficult and lengthy period of threat from international and home-grown terrorism which sometimes necessitates certain police tactics, I believe that the fundamental rights of citizens should still be respects and at every opportunity, protected. Whilst I would not support any call for the police to make use of fewer tactics in the fight against terrorism, I certainly agree that the police need to be reminded to be considerate, explaining their actions to those affected in the hope of mitigating any adverse inconvenience to law abiding citizens. As such, I will pass on your comments to the Metropolitan Police Service. Thank you for taking the time to contact the London Assembly Liberal Democrats. Yours sincerely Graham Tope Spokesperson for Policing London Assembly Liberal Democrats

spylaw4 Posted April 16, 2008 Share #212 Posted April 16, 2008 Excellent find Andy! I have today received a letter from my MP Meg Hillier who it appears has been elevated to Ministerial rank. As such she is unable to sign the EDM, although she "appreciates the points you have raised". She has forwarded my letter (actually an email) to Michael Wills, Minister of State for the Ministry of Justice and will send me the reply when she has received it. Any guesses as to the tone of the reply?

farnz Posted April 21, 2008 Share #219 Posted April 21, 2008 Returned from walking amongst thecharming and friendly people of the Netherlands to find the following reply from Andrew Pelling's Constituency Caseworker, Margaret Ronald on my doormat in response to my request to Richard Ottaway to sign the EDM 1155 on Andrew Pelling's behalf or his own recognisance: "Dear Mr F@rnsworth Thank you for you further email to Mr Ottaway who as you are aware is currently assisting with Andrew Pelling's constituency work whilst he is on sick leave and it is on that basis that I am writing to you. I am sorry to learn of your incident last autumn which must have been both alarming and offensive. It is important that we have evidence of such occurrences and I am grateful to you for this and other information that you supplied in your e-mail. I have forwarded your correspondence to David Ruffley MP, Shadow Police Minister, so that he is fully aware of your concerns about the important matter. Thank you once again for writing to us. Yours sincerely Margaret Ronald." The more voices, the louder the message? I note that Richard Ottaway still hasn't bothered to sign though ... Pete. earleygallery Posted April 21, 2008 Share #220 Posted April 21, 2008 Pete, I'm still waiting for my response (also responses from Mr Mitchell and the Home Secretary). Andrew Pelling may be on 'sick' leave but he won't be returning at any time as our MP so why aren't we having a by election? Richard Ottoway is either 'acting as MP' or merely 'assisting' depending what you read. Makes it easy for him to decline requests such as ours........ That said, every letter and every response can only help increase awareness of the issue so its definately not in vain.
