IMast Posted June 6, 2008 Share #309 Posted June 6, 2008 I have finally had a reply from my MP which although factual is not what I would have expected. I quote part of the reply " With regard to a photography code I must say that I do not feel that such a code would necessarily represent a positive step. People can do as they wish unless the law specifically forbids an act or omission on their part. .......Further we would not be able to trust the Home Office to develop a sensible code." The MP is a lawyer and Shadow Minister for Wales and is a personal aquaintance of mine. I must say I was astounded by his reply which is in essence "yes its wrong but the opposition can't do anything about it! I have yet to finalise my reply (3rd Draft so far) but he sure as hell won't like it! An interested aside, and on a rainy day just before the Crewe by election, I counted and analysed the EDM votes which were: Labour 100 of 351 = 28.49% Conserv. 43 of 192 = 22.4% Lib Dem 47 of 63 = 74.6% Others 15 of 35 = 42.85% What a tale that tells! Finally for a real laugh go to http://www.scottkelby.com where there is a link to a Fox TV interview with the Head of PR at Union Station who is being interviewed on this subject. "There is no restriction on photography here he says" - now watch the video clip. For me it summed the whole problem up in a few seconds. Ian
spylaw4 Posted June 6, 2008 Share #310 Posted June 6, 2008 To sit on his hands - and from the snippet of his reply that is what I take it he is saying - will simply let restrictive practices develop and legislation be passed. 205 is a sizeable number of concerned MPs however. Probably he, like my MP, is barred from signing anyway, being a "Minister" albeit in waiting. I do however get and agree with his point re the Home Office! Keep us posted please! earleygallery Posted June 7, 2008 Share #312 Posted June 7, 2008 I have finally had a reply from my MP which although factual is not what I would have expected. I quote part of the reply " With regard to a photography code I must say that I do not feel that such a code would necessarily represent a positive step. People can do as they wish unless the law specifically forbids an act or omission on their part. .......Further we would not be able to trust the Home Office to develop a sensible code." The quote implies that you have suggested that some sort of code should be issued, NOOOO!!!!! I think your MP is absolutely right. A 'code' would in effect be a law, and the whole point of this thread is that there is nothing unlawful about photography in public spaces. We only need for the toytown police as well as the real police to be made aware of the issues, and the law as it stands.
IMast Posted June 8, 2008 Share #313 Posted June 8, 2008 Sorry James if I confused you. Reference to a code is included in the end sentence of Austin Mitchell's EDM. Ian
earleygallery Posted June 11, 2008 Share #314 Posted June 11, 2008 I received a wishy washy response to my letter to the Home Office. spylaw4 Posted June 24, 2008 Share #317 Posted June 24, 2008 Is the bit about the Police & Criminal Evidence Act allowing them to seize equipment etc. correct? How does this fit with the para. in Bill's admirable resume that states that equipment etc. may not be confiscated without a warrant?
