bayerische Posted March 6, 2008 Share #62 Posted March 6, 2008 Today I'm glad to live in Finland. I think I'll take off to photograph the Parliament, and Police stations in Helsinki. The entrance to the military installation in my home town etc. I bet I won't get into ANY kind of trouble for doing this.

stunsworth Posted March 7, 2008 Share #64 Posted March 7, 2008 Bill, it you had that credit card sized, and in laminated plastic I reckon you could blag your way into almost any event. The trick is to look confident. I was once stopped in Paris photographing an event and asked for my press credentials. The first thing that ran through my mind was why hadn't I bothered to fake some. To be honest, in that situation I deserved to be asked, I was bobbing and weaving in the middle af a Chinese new Year parade.

jrc Posted March 7, 2008 Share #66 Posted March 7, 2008 The weakness in most of these suggestions is that the people who are receiving the complaints *don't care.* The complaints would be more effective if the people could be made to care. Perhaps, Dear Sir: We are quite concerned about the effect of your anti-photography program on the innocent, especially tourists, who have little knowledge of the English legal system. Therefore, we are posting on every foreign tourist site that we can find, the explanation that a person can be detained by police in London, or anywhere else in England, for taking photographs, even in a public place, simply on the suggestion that they may be "odd." We hope you won't be inconvenienced by the massive decline in the tourist trade. Sincerely, etc. JC
StS Posted March 7, 2008 Share #67 Posted March 7, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) Ah...... but when Mr Photographer's collar is felt, he can produce his Identity Card and thereby prove that he is a upright citizen! See- it all falls into place. This might sound a bit polemic (but is true nevertheless): we have them in Germany since - 1938. (they were called Kennkarte back then rather than Personalausweis nowadays. Lots of laws were made by these bastards which are still valid today... And while introducing them why not include a RFID chip? The movement profiles created by your mobile phones are are rather inaccurate. Stefan
imported_peter_m Posted March 7, 2008 Share #68 Posted March 7, 2008 This is rather a disturbing read, specially if you are somewhat a hermit and live in the sticks. I suppose that is the way things are going and not just over your way. Kind of starting over here as well, had a big thing in the paper a wile back on how much more security they need in Vancouver for the Olympics....... StS Posted March 7, 2008 Share #69 Posted March 7, 2008 Sorry for showing off my strange professional life, I just picture someone trying to follow my mobile phone tracks over the last and next weeks, Tokyo, Kuala Lumpur, Taipei, now Tokyo again and Osaka (it was not planned this way but they keep asking me 'while you are in Asia anyhow, couldn't you...'). Gruppenführer, da muß ein Fehler im System sein! Now I am getting polemical
Sandokan Posted March 7, 2008 Share #70 Posted March 7, 2008 Maybe we should all go to: Tower of London St Pauls Canary Wharf Rejent St Oxford St Harrods Hyde Park Parliament Sq Trafalgar Square (oh, sorry - you are not allowed to take photos there anyway) Buck Palace XXX Castle National Trust Property (at least there are not as many surveilance cameras there) And then call the Terrorist Hotline every time you see a person with a camera - or mobile phone with bullt in camera (they could be taking photos with GPS information and dictating exactly what they saw simultaneously?). What if iPods were the next terrorist toy? I lived in London through the IRA years - and it was never this stupid. "Keep Calm and Carry On" - as King George once said. Good luck - I am glad I left UK (I guess a brown skin, turban and camera would have me dead within seconds).
bayerische Posted March 7, 2008 Share #71 Posted March 7, 2008 Think about mobile phones, thay can be used to set of remotely operated bombs! "99% of all people talk on their mobile phones. What if one of them seems odd? That is why every patriotic citizen should carry along a portabe and foldable Faraday Cage, so that if one of these persons talking on the phone seem odd, you can incapsule her/him in the cage, thus preventing him from setting of terrorist bombs remotely using his phone." cocker Posted March 7, 2008 Share #72 Posted March 7, 2008 Steve You're a dodgy bloke. As is Pete, and Bill, and Keith and... I know where you all live... Hell in a hand-cart. Dodgy ... and proud of it and proud to be in such company! I do now have a "Come on Copper - make my day!" view. I have the same approach when I go through Airport Security and our grandly renamed "Border Control". I always wave and smile at the myriad of lenses taking my picture. But the point about arrest and DNA is a very serious one. My regret is there is no political party that is prepared to take this issue up. I have joined Liberty Liberty - Protecting Civil Liberties Promoting Human Rights : Home in the absence of a party political representative. As a historian I look at what is happening now and am very concerned. I have seen this before and seen where it leads.
cocker Posted March 7, 2008 Share #73 Posted March 7, 2008 Serious point. Why don't we have a set of cards printed? Leica Forum ones, that is. Nice red dot, web address, name, and a simple strapline such as: "I am exercising my right to take a photo" Regards, Bill Excellent idea - as is Andy's civil disobedience stroll. I'm up for it! andybarton Posted March 7, 2008 Share #74 Posted March 7, 2008 So, that's all right then. I shall print a copy of this email and keep it in my Billingham. _____________________________ Dear Mr Barton, I have provided you with my personal interpretation of the aims behind the counter terrorism campaign. The MPS is not proposing to start arresting people for taking photographs in our capital or to undertake what you call a 'security clampdown'. There is no intention to start stigmatizing photgraphers or to infringe on people's human rights. All we are asking is that members of the public remain vigilant and report anything they think is suspicious, which might relate to terrorist activity. As you will appreciate, the MPS cannot fight terrorism in isloation and we need the support of our community to help us. I can assure you that if we do receive intelligence from members of the public we will not take any action unless our analysis and research suggests that the intelligence has genuine credence. I appreciate your concerns but stand by my view that the campaign is not aimed at and will not result in the infringement of liberties and rights that you allude to. If you want me to forward your e-mail to the MPS Counter Terrorism Command, who authored the campaign, I am happy to bit I do not feel that I can add any more to my response. Kind regards, Mark Lawrence/ Detective Chief Inspector Directorate of Professional Standards Customer Service Team
andybarton Posted March 7, 2008 Share #75 Posted March 7, 2008 And finally (Esther) My final response to DCI Lawrence ___________________ Thank you for your prompt response (again!) I am sure you can understand why people would be concerned on reading the MPS poster, but I do understand what it is you have to do in order to fulfill your role. Here's hoping that all your "beat" colleagues and PCSOs are fully trained in their responsibilities and the rights of the individual in this matter I shall carry a copy of this email with me whenever I am taking photographs in London Many thanks Regards Andy Barton Sent using BlackBerry® from Orange

I, for one, would like to do likewise and the more of us that do this the better. I wouldn't bother DCI Lawrence again, as he will be getting pissed off with us, and the subject. I think he's responded in good faith. I await a response from my MP, AP and Liberty though. I would recommend that you contact all of them.
Rona!d Posted March 7, 2008 Share #79 Posted March 7, 2008 I was really surprised, that it is still allowed to take pictures in London. Tourists usually buy postcards, don´t they?
