Advice to photographers in Uk

Very well done Bob, you handle yourself with absolute dignity and with a level head.

We had a similar situation in Australia, a photographer was arrested, and images deleted from his camera, as well as some damage to his camera equipment. It barely makes the news, but that photographer also got released.

I carry around a printout of the photographers rights if I'm shooting in the city. I have not been questioned by police, but if I am I will politely provide them with this document and inform them - as you did - that I am not required to provide them with any personal information.

I found it hard staying calm just reading about it. I will find it very difficult to stay calm if it happens to me.

The problem is that once the police decide to stop and ask they dare not let it go. So once you refuse it will, I suspect, in every case end up with you being arrested.

So the way to resolve this is for the police to be far more sensible about the whole issue of street photography. Will they ever get the message, one can only hope so.

So Bob down at the station did they get the information they were asking for? Did they DNA and fingerprint you and put you on a database. They will of course have recorded the arrest.

Jeff

Hi Jeff.

The important thing is not to refuse to give your details (which I did at the end as I'd run out of options based on my knowledge at that time). The important thing is to get them to prove that you are obliged to do so. I'm in the process of writing a 'dealing with the police' guide for photographers, which I'll make available once completed. It will be full of links to more information about this kind of thing.

Yes, they did steal my DNA and finger/hand prints, but if you watch the end you will hear me telling him i didn't consent to any of these things. That is important too, because this is all about contract and consent.

A 'statute' or 'act' is ‘A legislative rule of society given the force of Law by consent of the governed’. I didn't consent. Also, I'm not a member of the society they are talking about. What is the name of their society? In the legal world, anything that doesn't have a name doesn't exist.

Better stop myself or I'll be at it all day.

Cheers

B

My wife and I planned to go to the south of Britain (Cornwall) together with our Moggy this summer.

This plan I think we should forget and switch to France or even Prague.....

For this behaviour I have just one phrase from a film of our famous R. Werner Faßbinder:

"Angst essen Seele auf" translated roughly: Fear eats soul.

You are right, therefore you shouldn't let your fear stop you going to Cornwall. It's beautiful. I'm sure you'll be fine.

Regards

Bob

I forgot to say. The copper who arrested me threw my M9 onto his passenger seat

I'd started to ask him if he would please be careful with it before that as he was holding it precariously by the lens, but he cut me off and said I was in no position to be making requests.

You godda laugh.

Sorry Bob, it's my fault due to my poor English....

This phrase or movie titel describes the status of your local authorities, police and others paid by you.....

I have no fear or much more worse, in this situation I would not be so calm and polite as you had been.......

Here the experiences of one of America's best streetphotographer (without visible pics made by him):

The funny thing is that they really try to be reasonable and follow the rules, whilst clearly ignorant of the law. For instance they allow Bob to record the episode, whilst not allowing him to film their face (which is not prohibited afaik), but then again, they are not trying to force him to show/delete his images. I think the main problem is in the training they receive.

The problem is that they don't want to realize and swallow how low their lives are and what the heck are they doing in the middle of Christmas Holidays !!! Furthermore, they can't accept the fact that most of the people in there is shopping like crazy and they are only patrolling likes a$$e$, harassing people. God help Bob, if they actually knew that the price of that camera+lens would equal one year's salary of them! Funny thing is, that Bob is protected by ignorance of those nobodys, simply because they aren't in any way capable of knowing :p

Hang on.

This is not over moderating, IMHO. I haven't deleted anything, nor suppressed any discussion.

All I have tried to do is keep THIS thread on topic, and move the slightly off-topic discussion to a new thread.

How on earth can that be over-moderation? Please tell me. I'd be delighted to know.

Andy, you over-moderating as far as I am concerned.

Terry

Terry,

I respectfully disagree. The intrusion had dragged this important thread totally off-topic and that discussion is better off in a thread of its own.

Andy, I think you took the right action.

Now let's please continue on-topic.

Pete.

Think about it - it was doing just fine. But hey you have the badge, do what you will. Who decided it belonged in Barnack's Bar - you! As I said do what you will. Please try and control the attitude - just a bit.

Terry.

Attitude? I was only doing what I thought was the best for this thread, which is important in and of itself, and for the discussion that has grown, like Topsy, out of this thread. If you disagree, then so be it, but IMHO, the recent discussion which used to be in this thread was straying too far from the raison d'être of this thread.

Whether it's in the Bar, or not, is of no real importance. Would it have been better if it had been in the Customer section? No. I don't think so. But, that's just my opinion too.

You are more than welcome to disagree with me, and I respect your viewpoint. But if you have any views on the recent postings, please make them in the thread in the Bar

Terry, you are waaaay out of line. No it was not doing "just fine". This thread was being dragged into completely irrelevant areas and being made less useful as a result. The debate raging in the Bar has taken on a life of it's own. Andy was right to do what he did, and accusing him of "attitude" is frankly inexplicable.

Regards,

Bill
