Better hood for 35 ASPH Summilux

Whereas I am delighted with my 35 Chrome ASPH Summilux, I was not too keen on either the hood or particularly the "self detaching" cap. When I had a visit last week from fellow forum member George Backshall, I tried on the hood from his 28 Summicron. It fitted perfectly and is a different quality of hood and cap altogether, with a solid cap fitting inside the much more robust hood. The cap has finger tab releases. I ordered one from Neil at H A Baker and it arrived today. I have tested it at full 1.4 aperture and can confirm that not unsurprisingly, since it is designed for a 28mm lens, there is no vignetting on the 35 Lux. Of course, being Leica it is not cheap at £78 but to protect an irreplaceable (a 35 ASPH Lux that does not back-focus or aperture shift) lens, I think it is well worth it. Sorry about the rather blown out photo but it is difficult to get a matte black hood to show.

Another alternative for the 35 Lux is a round metal hood. I use the old Contax GC-2 for the 35 Lux and I know a few others that use inexpensive metal hoods from ebay. No lens cap but I find with the uv/ir filter and a small microfiber cloth ....I can keep it clean. The Contax hood also comes in a Titanium color that works with chrome lenses.

Interesting. I use a 3rd party round hood that is roughly the same size as the lens diameter.

46mm wide angle screw in hood from heavy2stars on eBay has worked for me on the M6 and M8. I suspect that you could use a standard angle hood as well on the M8, but I haven't tried. They're $7 or something similar + $5 shipping to Europe.

Looks like this: http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/digital-forum/12611-alternate-35mm-1-4-lux-hood.html#post130598

I had problems with the original hood of my Summilux.

I was told the Summicron28's hood would be a good replacement.

I was thinking on this possibility. In the meantime I reconciled with the original hood.

Your photograph is very interesting. The Summicron28's hood is a good alternative indeed.

I've always found the 28 Summicron hood to be ludicrously large and ungainly and couldn't replace it quickly enough with for the hood from the 35 Summilux when I started using the 28 on an M8. I much prefer the latter hood.

Wilson,

Funny, I was just thinking while shooting during Leica Day (4 days ago) what a piece of crap my 35mm Summilux hood is. The mounting ring with white dot can rotate slightly and I have to fuss about to figure what aperture I'm shooting at and I really don't like that rubber lens hood cover.

So I read your post this morning, went to the gym and a Leica dealer isn't to far away and figured their is no chance in hell they will have this hood. To make a long story short you cost me about $120!

I don't know if you are kidding above about selling the original hood, but I wouldn't.

This thinker likes the original hood... but the Summicron28's is a good alternative for those who don't like it for any reason... It fits the lens nicely too.

I posted in this forum alternative instructions for placing and removing the original hood of the Summilux 35mm, because the printed instructions of Leica were wrong. Yo

I have written this post because I had problems with the hood of the Summilux-M 35mm f/1.4 ASPH lens. Finally, I solved the problem, and it hadn't nothing to do with the hood itself, but with the instruction manual instead!

The instructions about the use of the hood in the small "Instructions" card included with the lens are wrong:

1) The text in English is this (p. 11): "To fit the lens hood, place the white dot on the lens hood against the white index dot on the lens and push down". This is uncorrect. The correct procedure is this: "To fit the lens hood, place the red vertical red arrow against the white index dot on the lens, press the two catches and push down. When the hood is placed, release the two catches and turn the hood's ring to the right following the direction of the horizontal red arrow".

2) Then, the original text says: "To remove the lens hood, simply press the two catches and pull off the hood the lens". This is uncorrect as well. The correct instruction should be like this: "To remove the lens hood, turn the hood's ring to the left and then press the two catches and pull off the hood from the lens."

I can read French, and the instructions are erroneous in that language too. I don't know if the problem affects the German instructions too.

If you follow the instructions as they are you will be unable to put in or take out the hood. Even more, you can damage the lens trying to manipulate the hood by putting a lot of pressure on it in the wrong direction!

Now, manipulating the hood is easy, and I like the hood.

When the hood is placed correctly it works perfect, and I recommend it.

Wilson, do you want to sell your original hood and cap?
