Auto focus ............... and there is nothing really out there small enough with a wide DOF. Need the auto for the shoot and run stuff, the D2 does a great job but the 100iso limitation makes it really hard work. Sure I can do it and have so for some time, but I have to shoot too many frames for my liking (not chasing that moment as the images are part of a bigger narrative)

Has to be small as on a

long shoot: it's a RD-1, a Bessa R4A, plus a couple of lenses a HV -20 mini DV(long term project images/film) and that's too much as it is.

local protest/parade etc: it's a RD-1, a Bessa R4A plus a couple of lenses

otherwise : it's a RD-1 plus a couple of lenses

Interesting. I guess if you want isolation then yeah, it has to be a dSLR and not the Ricoh or something.

So this is going to sound stupid, but you know the best buy on the planet right now has got to be the 5d given all the rebates and sales on it... full frame, great (but last generation) high ISO, smaller than other pro bodies, and you can bolt just about anybody's glass on it if need be.

I sometimes shoot a 5d with an Oly Zuiko 21 f2 on it. It's a tiny tiny thing, a bit soft wide open but very, very well corrected.

If you can live with the crop, which means you need to hunt again for wides with separation, you might think about a digital rebel even or D40.

Personally, what I'd really like is a a digital OM with the right sensor to go the digital M. It could have AF too :) It could be built by Leica, too and they could call it the R10 ;)

(to say nothing of the theological implications of a digital OM. Sorry, bad pun. Need coffee.).

Nikon D200. Used ones can be had for a song these days. Or if you need more high iso capabilities either the D300 or the Canon 5D if you have the $. Best thing about having a Nikon or Canon dslr around is the ability to easily rent lenses for those "special needs." Not many of us can buy a Leica R 400mm lens but a Nikon or Canon can be had for $35-50 a day.

No Queens for me, but the Mardi Gras is on soon so there will be a bucket load around:D

Sorry but waving a D200 and a 400mm lens is like hanging around a corner with a shotgun. never shot over 85mm, 24-75 is my range

I am going to have a good look at a 5D, play with a few raw files and see what they do, too much resolution could be a no go zone

thanks

The pentax is what I recommend to to all the organisations that I do tutorials for ....... they produce great results but seem to lack something ???!, the K10D is not a small camera.

Anyway being a cheapskate I picked up a Oly E-410 factory second for $365 today. I like the colour rendition of Oly, sure going to drop half a stop or so of highlight, but I can sorta live with that. Plus Oly takes a heap of other lenses old and new.

I am off to the Stans (Kaz, Uzbek etc) in about 5 weeks or so I will probably step out into the bullring/shitfight of the streets of a evening every now and then . Armed with the Oly only if someone knocks me on the head I won't feel a loss except some grey matter cells. Never know some guy may want to sell me a Leica R lens for a song ( probably a bottle) stolen a minute earlier :D

ps...Did you see the two Queens on the harbour today?

I've been to Sydney 50+ times and yesterday was the only day I really wanted to be there with my Leica's but alas..... I live west of the Black Stump.

Gauging by the photos on the web, Cremoine would have been a great spot with the House n Bridge in the background.

410's a good choice. I have the 400. The kit lenses are surprisingly good (and weigh nothing) but the pro-series lenses are a cut above. If you can get hold of a 14-54, do so. The performance outweighs the extra weight.

Auto focus ...............

Then I'm surprised that anyone would suggest you get a Canon 5D and bolt some other brand of lens on it, because nobody else's AF lens will AF on a Canon body. Even the iris doesn't link up, you have to use stop-down yourself.

Cordell, if you bolt a 21mm on a 5d you can zone focus at f 2.8 very effectively. That way, unlike autofocus in the dark, you can remain sharp and quick.

If you need separation, and wide angles, there are no Canon AF choices that aren't hideously distorted, overly expensive, or very large.

If you've ever seen the size of an Oly 21mm f2 on a 5d, you'd understand why it's interesting for something small. Auto-focus, no. Easy to focus? Yes.

(and stop-down metering, for those of us who shoot manually, is no big deal at all on a wide).

@ Imants--good on the 410. I hope the ISO goes where you want it to...but lots of lens choices, no doubt!

Thanks Jamie and I do think that it is a good idea, zone focusing a wide is a snack and considering I like to live on f8 it's easier. Yes I understand your reasoning Cordell it sorta makes a one lens camera for me.

Anyway the Oly should do the job, not ideal, I still hope that an R comes out but fence sitting is useless.

The rangefinders digital and film will still remain the mainstays until a P&S with a big sensor and wide DOF at all f stops comes out and that I can't see happening for a while

stnami,

For what it is worth - One more vote for the Olympus, I have several which is being used professionally and they are holding up very well, also the new E3 really is pleasing me with its output and general feel and performance. I tend to leave it on auto-graduation for the great effect of the pretend wider dynamic range, this works up to about iso 320-400 ish.

and it does great with "other" lenses not made by Oly.

Just my two cents.

Bo
