I went to Le Mans Classic two years ago and indeed, it's a great subject to shoot. You were even luckier because of another great ingredient, the fog. Some others ? Starring with the powder blue Karmann Ghia convertable I bought as a student for $250 in 1970 from someone that was "dropping out", I'll take a refill any day. My wife still lets me drive her Boxter.
