Any R10 beta testers out there?

Dave, you REALLY checked the EXIF - that´s funny! Yes, the SLK is different, it does not attract me in any way!

Ronald, how is the SLK beta testing going?.............somewhat different to a Morgan!

The EOS 5D at 85mm with auto exposure, auto white balance did a good job too but we would expect the R10 to do even better!

I would not be allowed to post R10-shots, would I?:D

So take these as "bad examples", any Leica would do better ;)

Are you saying a moderator posted a Canon image to a Leica forum :)

I was out for a job (not this one) with my evil job camera  Accidently i saw this "thing" parking.

"Discerning" is another word, I'd use :)

I don't want someone who only knows half a story telling me that "I won't be disappointed" - especially if I would have been disappointed by IR problems, green blobs and all the rest.

I want Leica to get the R10 right, test it properly, thoroughly, in all the wierdest lighting conditions imaginable and then some. I want them to test it in the Sahara and in Lapland, just like car manufacturers do. I want them to test the shutter to destruction, I want them to burn out the battery. I'm sure you get the point.

I don't want them to put anything to the public at Photokina if they haven't done all this. I'd rather wait for the next show, than them rush something out that isn't ready...

AMEN !!!

I'd rather wait for the next show, than them rush something out that isn't ready - lets face it, they're not exactly losing R sales right now because people are delaying their purchases - there are NO R sales right now anyway.

??? (scratches his head trying to understand the argument)

But I second that they should test the camera properly before going ahead and releasing it.

I fully agree with you! Better have them work anther 2 years but then bring something which is mature and the real next step! ;)

We saw too many not ready cameras touching the market in the last years, and I do not mean Leica cameras!

BTW - the M8 is ready now!

Let's think about what is next for Leica...

The DMR is sold out, and lately the Summarits were introduced. A 1200 Euro Summarit makes little sense on a 4000 Euro camera, so a downsampled M8 will show up soon. In addition to that we will hopefully see the R10. Soon thereafer (what soon may mean) the M9 and an R10 economy would make sense. Whatever will happen to R lenses, abandoning the R mount would propably mean that Zeiss, Cosina or Epson will make digtals bodies with R mount and I don't think Leica can afford to present a completely new line of AF or larger format lenses at once. So R mount probably stays and some deigns will be added or replaced with new - why not AF - lenses.

The marketing plan is becoming obvious and should work out very well.

While I agree with your thoughts on the camera models (both high end and economy line), I doubt that your assumptions with the DSLR AF lenses are becoming true. In my opinion there will be a complete AF line for the new DSLR and an adapter might offer backward compatibility to R lenses.

I think we need to end dreaming about reusability of the R mount as it is today forever. This would finally kill a future DSLR system as well as the existing R system (which is dead already).

I don't quite follow this line of thought.

This is drifting off topic, but why would a 1200 Euro lens mean that a downsampled M8 is on its way?

Peter, in the meantime I think you are right. The old R-System is dead and I am glad to have a well working R9-DMR-Combo with some excellent lenses.

But let`s hope there will be a new one. I have certain doubts.

Well it would make sense. Offer a low level entry point into the M system. Say a lens plus camera not more that 3000 €.

The downsized M8 could mean a lot of different things.

1) If a FF M is coming, this could be the high end M9. In parallel the downsized M8 for some 2000 € (say with sensor as it is now with 10MP). A full M8 could be an upgraded one with Crop - more MP, higher ISO ...

2) If no FF is coming, same for downgraded M8 and M8 follow on model.

And yes - all speculation, but at least making some sense.

If you want to reuse your R glass without any further investment (and no C or Oly) then the R9/DMR is a great option.

But I am confident (but I do not know), that the new Leica DSLR will also take old R glass, at least with an adapter. Question is how much functionality will be supported. I think that there could be at least support for measuring with open aperture.

Phil,

Guessing it is a "2009" model - with exciting new details in the tail-lights and headlights.. probably no changes to the sheet metal...

Car manufactures are pretty religious about their incredible small changes.

Personally I agree with the thought that it is still not a car I might purchase (even with cleverly redesigned blinkers)

On the R10 issue - if there is not a significant market of R shooters purchasing R cameras... Maybe a very interesting direction might be to sell some of this top-glass for some of the market leaders and focus on making fine glass for photographers who know good stuff.?

After all - making glass would be Leica's "core competence" ? (this being the primary skill which keeps a company competitive in the market place - if one loose focus on this there is a real reason the customers also loose focus on the company)

Bo
