Easier way to find total number of m8 frames you've shot on a Mac

Could have got this wrong, but might have stumbled on an easy way for Mac users to find out how many frames you've shot with your M8 without needing to download any apps. Apologies if I'm already stating the known.

Open an M8 file with basic Preview app, select Menu-> Inspector. Then choose the second tab in the window that appears. This shows the value of a field called Image Unique ID, which I think is the total count? (This is where I could be wrong). Then use Google to convert to decimal! ("0xff to decimal" for example).

Hi,

I am not a Mac user so do not know what GUI tools you have but as it uses UNIX you should be able to use the 'bc' command.

Open a shell prompt and type:

bc <return>

Then:

ibase=16 <return>

Then:

The hex number <return>

You will then get the decimal number printed as a response.

Type CTRL-D to return to the shell.

Thanks,

Ed

Simply open an image with MacOS X's 'Graphic Converter' app, click on 'exif' and wonder at the data that unfolds before your eyes:)

My OS is Tiger. My Preview does not have a "Menu", but I can get the hex unique ID by Document>Get Info>Details. Tiger has two calculators: simple one in the Dock, the other in Applications. The latter converts hex to dec. I apparently have only 712 activations.

Phil,

There is a very nice little app out there called EXIF Viewer for OSX. I haven't specifically tired this with M8 images but certainly with other cameras it works fine. It only reads JPG but that is not a problemo.

Thanks for this tip! Am I correct in assuming that the number tracks the total files created as opposed to shutter clicks, ie: if you shoot DNG + JPG the number increases by 2 for each exposure?

best,

Alan

No No No. It doesn't matter whether you are shooting just DNG or just JPEG or both DNG+JPEG, one shutter click is one shutter click.

Look at the DNG + JPEG, they have the same number!! It's just the extension that is different.
