peggers Posted February 13, 2008 Share #1 Posted February 13, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) Could have got this wrong, but might have stumbled on an easy way for Mac users to find out how many frames you've shot with your M8 without needing to download any apps. Apologies if I'm already stating the known. Open an M8 file with basic Preview app, select Menu-> Inspector. Then choose the second tab in the window that appears. This shows the value of a field called Image Unique ID, which I think is the total count? (This is where I could be wrong). Then use Google to convert to decimal! ("0xff to decimal" for example). Advertisement Posted February 13, 2008 Posted February 13, 2008 Hi peggers, Take a look here Easier way to find total number of m8 frames you've shot on a Mac. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Kent10D Posted February 14, 2008 Share #2 Posted February 14, 2008 If you're using a Mac just use the Calculator to convert from hex to decimal. Switch it to "Programmer" mode first (command-3, or "Programmer" from the "View" menu).
Shootist Posted February 14, 2008 Share #3 Posted February 14, 2008 Doesn't a Mac come with a scientific calculator? That is all you need to convert the HEX to Dec.
Stan Yoder Posted February 14, 2008 Share #4 Posted February 14, 2008 OK, I opened a jpg in Apple Preview. Where's the "Menu"?
ECliffordSmith Posted February 14, 2008 Share #5 Posted February 14, 2008 Hi, I am not a Mac user so do not know what GUI tools you have but as it uses UNIX you should be able to use the 'bc' command. Open a shell prompt and type: bc <return> Then: ibase=16 <return> Then: The hex number <return> You will then get the decimal number printed as a response. Type CTRL-D to return to the shell. Regards, Phil My OS is Tiger. My Preview does not have a "Menu", but I can get the hex unique ID by Document>Get Info>Details. Tiger has two calculators: simple one in the Dock, the other in Applications. The latter converts hex to dec. I apparently have only 712 activations. Regards, Phil Phil, There is a very nice little app out there called EXIF Viewer for OSX. I haven't specifically tired this with M8 images but certainly with other cameras it works fine. It only reads JPG but that is not a problemo. Best Regards. Terry
stevelap Posted February 14, 2008 Share #10 Posted February 14, 2008 What I was trying to say is that MacOSX has a built-in exif viewer in 'Graphic Converter'. Steve
Alan Friedman Posted February 15, 2008 Share #11 Posted February 15, 2008 Thanks for this tip! Am I correct in assuming that the number tracks the total files created as opposed to shutter clicks, ie: if you shoot DNG + JPG the number increases by 2 for each exposure? best, Alan

Look at the DNG + JPEG, they have the same number!! It's just the extension that is different.

Shootist Posted November 25, 2008 Share #15 Posted November 25, 2008 The link doesn't work anymore - does anyone have the file to share (Mac version)? Thanks. Yeah Mac version. Use the Built In Calculator to convert the UI ID from HEX to Dec. Very simple. No need to install any other software.
LeonardT Posted November 25, 2008 Share #16 Posted November 25, 2008 Why not just use an online hex converter. Then it doesn't matter if you have a mac or a pc. HEXADECIMAL to BINARY conversion, HEX to Decimal converter, Hexdecimal convertor Also the Unique Image ID can be seen in Photoshop in the EXIF data, jpg or raw doesn't matter. flkin Posted November 25, 2008 Share #17 Posted November 25, 2008 How do you get the "UI ID" without any additional software? I have Capture One and iphoto only. Can I get the UI ID from this software? I can't seem to find it.
