bill Posted February 8, 2008 Share #4 Posted February 8, 2008 Inspiring and sobering at the same time. As I have said before, I have bought the World Press Photo Yearbook every year since 1993, the year my Son was born. When he is 18 I shall give them to him as a record of the world he has grown up in. Regards, Bill
Guest WPalank Posted February 8, 2008 Share #5 Posted February 8, 2008 Thanks for the reminder Stuart, they always sneak up on me. Doing a little digging, I found a really incredible image (I know, they are all incredible). If you go to the 1st place winner for Spot News Story John Moore's series of the Bhutto Assassination, after clicking on the initial image (man standing in street), on the left is the rest of the series. First from last with the Pakastani People's Party flag draped over the casualties and a tattered poster of Bhutto nearby. Really incredible! Also loved Afghan man holding wounded boy. cocker Posted February 8, 2008 Share #6 Posted February 8, 2008 Thanks Stuart, Photography can show us our bright and our dark side. We've been only looking for a hundred plus years so we will take a while to learn! (An Englishman Rodger Fenton showed the idiocy of your Civil War right at the beginning of that century) Let's hope sense makes some inroads from seeing some of these images! Drip on a Stone! Guest stnami Posted February 10, 2008 Share #9 Posted February 10, 2008 Death , destruction war sells and sells well............. so it is the winner...........same same.........atleast last years winner had a quirkiness to it ........... same same for 2008, war death destruction Maybe the dumb association members will have a look at other aspects of our world....nah I doubt it ........... 1959, 1961 and 1970 must have been shitty war seasons, too clean so no contest
frc Posted February 10, 2008 Share #10 Posted February 10, 2008 When two tribes go to war, There's always a chap wich a camera....... Sonewhere, in a corner. Let us discuss the aesthetics of these marvellous images......
mgcd Posted February 10, 2008 Share #11 Posted February 10, 2008 Death , destruction war sells and sells well............. so it is the winner...........same same.........atleast last years winner had a quirkiness to it ........... same same for 2008, war death destruction Maybe the dumb association members will have a look at other aspects of our world....nah I doubt it ........... 1959, 1961 and 1970 must have been shitty war seasons, too clean so no contest The World Press is not a photography contest, it's a photojournalism contest, so yes conflict will rein as will other prominent stories. That's the nature of the profession. I see no need to refer to the association members as "dumb". The images need to be disturbing to get all of you to move in order to pressure your elected representatives to move their butts... even with that... guywalder Posted February 10, 2008 Share #12 Posted February 10, 2008 ........... 1959, 1961 and 1970 must have been shitty war seasons, too clean so no contest so your history lessons didnt include vietnam.... or is it that you, also, think a picture of Ms Spears having her head shaved would have been a more worthy winner? rob_x2004 Posted February 11, 2008 Share #13 Posted February 11, 2008 Just seems political to me. The image of the year has what going for it that makes it a stand out? I would be interested, like frc in what people think.
rob_x2004 Posted February 11, 2008 Share #14 Posted February 11, 2008 Guy if you ever go to the World press photo site you will see there were no contest posted in 59, 61 and 70.
MrEd Posted February 11, 2008 Share #15 Posted February 11, 2008 Just because the World Press Photo guys are trying to "shock" us into anything, it proves the theory that they're catering to the lowest common denominator. ...no big surprise here, nor progress towards a better life for humanity. . Guest stnami Posted February 11, 2008 Share #16 Posted February 11, 2008 Yes I am quite aware of it being photojournalism contest Conrad, and I may refer to the organisers as dumb, in fact I should have added shortsighted to the comment ..... They must of been sick of Vietnam by then, or was it because it was a American problem not a Europeon one ......... Ms Spears ................boom boom baby who does she shoot! apologies to Edward about the boom boom

Guest stnami Posted February 11, 2008 Share #20 Posted February 11, 2008 ........ remember this is one of may awards to come, world this photo this, that and everything......... with all these journos running around after the trophy it's gonna be hard for a soldier of fortune to shoot a couple of "bad" guys in peace let alone on the battlefield ...posing for a shot takes time
