spylaw4 Posted September 1, 2006 Share #1 Posted September 1, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) This has happened briefly once before but not for a couple of months. I thought it was just a little temporary glitch. Out shooting today with the Digilux2 in Rochester (Kent UK - not US) when suddenly after taking around 22 or 23 photos just as the next RAW file was finishing loading into memory I get a blue screen saying "Write Error". However it seems, on checking playback, that the photo has loaded onto the card ok. I have to turn off the camera and back on again to clear the screen and take the next photo. I've just checked the SD card on Image Capture and all the photos seem to be there ok, both RAW and JPG. So what's up Doc? Anyone had this problem? Is it the card or the camera? Could it be I maybe turned the camera off accidentally before one of the RAWs finished loading thus causing the problem? If it's the camera - how long does Leica UK take to do a service/repair? It is still under guarantee AFAIK. And do I send it direct or through a dealer and which dealer in London has the best reputation for such things? I"m heading for S America for 5 weeks early December and I must have the D2 in 100% order! I would appreciate your comments/advice - thanks! ADDENDUM: I've just noticed that the last 4 or 5 photos did not load a RAW file - just the JPG - rats!
Advertisement Posted September 1, 2006 Posted September 1, 2006 Hi spylaw4, Take a look here Faulty card or faulty D2?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
pekem Posted September 1, 2006 Share #2 Posted September 1, 2006 Brian, If the work is needed then I would suggest that you contact Leica UK. It is unlikely that any dealer, no matter how prestigous, would repair under warranty, more probably they would send it to Leica. Just give Leica a ring at: Leica Camera Limited Davy Avenue Knowlhill MK5 8LB Milton Keynes Contact person: Peter Melder Phone: 01908 256400 Fax: 01908 671316 E-mail: sales@leica-camera.co.uk
stuny Posted September 1, 2006 Share #3 Posted September 1, 2006 Brian - When I wanted some work done on my R8 and my D2 I took it directly to the US center (reasonalbly close to us), and had most of the work done while I waited, and other work put off until parts came in. If you're close enough to London, perhaps? If worse comes to worse, you can take the D2 with you and shoot jpeg only. Where in South America? Perhaps Barbara's trip notes on Brazil, Argentine & Chile, or on Peru, or on the Galapagos & Ecuador would be useful to you. Just go to the Trip Notes section of our site. Good luck with the repairs, and have wonderful holidays.
gepetto Posted September 1, 2006 Share #4 Posted September 1, 2006 Brian how long has it been since you reformated the SD card?
rob_x2004 Posted September 2, 2006 Share #5 Posted September 2, 2006 You might want to try 'Card Cean Up'....Sorry i cant tell you where in the manual it is but it should be close or next to the instruction for format funtion.
spylaw4 Posted September 2, 2006 Author Share #6 Posted September 2, 2006 Thanks all of you for your comments and suggestions. rob - I can't find anything about "clean-up" but I presume you really mean "format". gepetto - The manual said you don't need to format - so until now I have not done so. However in Troubleshooting it makes a note about a similar error message and gives re-format as a 'cure". I have done this and the dreaded blue screen (shades of windows!) has now gone when taking a photo. pekem - Thanks for the details of Leica UK. Even though it is possible that the problem has gone, I will still contact them on Monday as a precaution. I'll post updates as required. Stu - I'll certainly look at your photos! I'm sure they will as always be inspirational. I'm off the Buenos Aires (4th time), then Chile (Santiago and N.) + Easter Island.
gepetto Posted September 2, 2006 Share #7 Posted September 2, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Glad to hear this Brian. Was the Blue screen and error happening straight away or after taking several pictures? If it seemed to be happening at the same point on the card you may want to replace the SD card. It could have bad sectors or blocks. SD cards have long warranty's.
rob_x2004 Posted September 2, 2006 Share #8 Posted September 2, 2006 No bud I mean clean up. Maybe the function isn't in the D2 menu, it is an ancient camera? Anone know for sure? Certainly it is on Lux2 and stuff and it does make a difference. Format scrubs files and clean up repairs all manner of sins.
spylaw4 Posted September 2, 2006 Author Share #9 Posted September 2, 2006 After several pictures gepetto. I'll run through some trials tomorrow so see what happens. Rob - it may be on the D-Lux menu but it isn't on the D2 as far as I can see, nor in the manual.
philipotto Posted September 2, 2006 Share #10 Posted September 2, 2006 I just got a 2GB Sandisk Ultra II for my LC1, was using a Ultra II 512. Never had a problem, until yesterday I was shooting with my 2GB for the first time and after 130 HQJPEGS I got that same blue screen and "write error" message. I tired RAW, same result. I tried high compression JPG and got no such error. I tired low compression 640x480, no problem. To note, not to say it means anything. The 512MB card I was shooting had a capacity for 131 jpgs, the 2GB card holds 484. So when I was using the new 2gb card it only let me take 512mbs worth of photos. I formated the card, and I hope that will relieve my woes, I may have to shoot 131 more jpgs to find out..

spylaw4 Posted September 3, 2006 Author Share #12 Posted September 3, 2006 Brad, Phil, thanks for the useful comments - "glad" to hear that I am not the only sufferer and that re-formatting the card seems to be the cure. Mine was a 1Gb Sandisc Ultra II card and I have 3 others which will now get the "treatment"!
regista Posted September 3, 2006 Share #13 Posted September 3, 2006 Don't you have a back-up card you can cross-test against? The one that came with the camera, perhaps?
