Leica Dlux 3

Greetings!

I am planning on purchasing the Leca DLux 3. I believe that it has been out for about 2 years now. Does anyone know when the next successor model will come out? I would hate to spend all that money on a soon to be outdated model.

I really like the black model but worry about scratchs versus the silver model. Any comments regarding wear and tear of the black versus silver models?

Lastly, is a 2GB fast SD card (Lexar) large enough for an amateur?

Thank you,

Marty

Martin,

be welcome in the Leica Forum!

I own a black D-Lux 3 since more than a year ... I personally prefer the black one as it is more the 'instrument' appearance vs. the more stylish silver look ...

I am a very happy D-Lux 3 user - it is a very good camera.

Till today I have luckily (knock on wood.. ) absolutely no problem with scratches, even the display is w/o scratches thanks to the good coating.

Regarding SD card capacity: 2 GB should be enough for the start - you can save around 480 jpegs or 80 Raws on it with highest resolution ... for my next holidays I am thinking about an additionaly 4 GB SDHC as I want to start to shoot more RAW for B&W processing ...

cheers,

Peter

I've owned a D-Lux 3 for about 6 months and am most satisfied; a great snapshot camera for social events. I attend several black-tie events annually and the D-Lux 3 is unobtrusive and fits in my jacket pocket quite nice. I would not use anything beyond a 2 GB memory card. If the card "crashes" and data lost, best to keep it to a minimum. Large cards eliminate the need to change often, but if you have a probem you then potentially can lose a whole lot of data.

Hello and welcome to the forum.

I have a black D-Lux 3 and after about 9 months use its still in great condition no scratches anywhere. It's a great little camera and as mentioned in a previous post its good for slipping in a jacket pocket. I have the brown leather case which is very nice but I don't find it very practical for everyday use, it's great for storage and transporting but I prefer to keep the camera available ready for use.

Regarding the storage I have a 2Gb card and since I use RAW I need more storage for a full day's walkabout so it's either another couple of 2Gb cards or a 4Gb.

I don't know when a new model will be released, but like most consumer products it won't be long until a new model comes along and seduces us to part with our hard earned money.

Regards

Harry

There's a wealth of great information on this site regarding the D-Lux3 so do check the past archives. I picked the D-Lux3 in black... I've owned it over a year not a mark on it... I tote it around in the Leica brown leather case... and agree it's awkward when you try to use it in and out of its case. I added a neck strap to the camera... it's long enough to allow the camera to ride in my pants pocket for instant point and shoot... I've had fun getting a grip on the using my first digital camera with it's many setting possibilities, the ease access to many settings with the joystick, ISO, f-stop, etc. 98% of my shots are done without the flash with natural lighting... I'd go with the 2g cards and use a card reader to speed up download time... As for waiting for D-Lux4, hey oh well... there's always something greener and new just over the horizon...

I (well, my wife) has a D-Lux 3 that I borrow as required.

It's not a point and shoot that gives you its best straight out of the box. It needs time to get anything like the best out of it.

Black is the only colour to get, btw.

I managed to drop mine on concrete about a week into ownership. A couple of dents in the base and slight graze on the edge of the lens housing.

Thankfully it still works perfectly and nary a scratch on the display. The thing is solidly built. I am however pondering putting some friction tape on the front...it is a slippery sucker. I love shooting native 16x9 raw. I am seeing things differently as a result of the camera. Very cool.

I have a Panasonic LX2 that is basically the same camera as the Leica but without the red dot (and is cheaper of course). It's my carry around camera and provides backup if I'm off on a trip.

I like the 16:9 aspect ratio, it allows for some interesting compositions. I have to say that I don't really get on with the lack of a viewfinder. But that's just me, and anyway most of the cameras in the compact p&s category seem to lack them.

Chromatic aberration can be an issue at times and the high ISOs aren't very good, but again I think that's pretty common in this class of camera.

I've had no problems with scratching - the Panasonic is in black - and I don't mollycoddle the camera.

A 2 gig card should be ok - that's what I use - and to be honest they're so cheap now that if you need more then just buy another card.

Here's a full frame shot taken last Tuesday.

I had an LX2 as my point and shoot until recently, I swapped it for a Fuji F30 as I wanted a camera that could shoot iso1600 as most of the times I had my point and shoot it was evening events etc.

But after getting the F30 I realised just how good the LX2 was for a point and shoot, I had been using a Canon SLR for a couple of years and was comparing it to that, and for alot of times it did very well indeed.

This is a shot taken using the LX2......

Martin,

No scratches yet, and I agree with Andy that black is the only one.

A 2gig SD provides space for 86 RAW+JPEGs. There isn't an option to shoot RAW without JPEG and it doesn't utilize an algorithm to reduce RAW file size, so each RAW is 19.6MB + the size of the accompanying JPEG.

Hi Martin, I think you'll find the D-Lux 3 a very capable, small P&S..and yes, get the fastest SD card you can, nothing beats speed..here's a shot taken the other day 16:9 mode, f/4, 1/125sec. ISO-100..enjoy your choice..Bill ~

I echo everyone's else's endorsement of the D-Lux 3 / LX-2. I've had mine for about a year and it's been a great camera.

As far as when the D-Lux 4, it should be about 4-6 months after Panasonic announces the LX-2's successor. And then you still have the lag between announcement and availability as well as the backlog of orders.

It was almost impossible to find a D-Lux 3 a few months back. If you NEED the camera now, get it.

And, sorry Maggie, *BLACK* is the way to go ;-)

I've used a black DL3 since it came out in the UK and have found the finish to be sound - I personally tend to prefer black over silver but having had a silver DL2 previously found that to be just as adequate.

One point to watch is to protect the rear screen, with something like a Belkin PDA screen protector, as it has the potential to be scratched

Maggie's right, Sliver's fine ! :-)

I'm happy with my dlux3, I've had it in january 2007 and I always have it in my bag, which is great because my Canon 5D is a bit big and heavy... 2Go is fine, as long as you take a computer with you when you travel. If you don't allready, you must start shooting raw with it, it's a pleasure editing the raw files in softwares like Lightoom. I suggest you convert the raw file to dng too, as the file size gets divided by 2.
