psquared Posted January 29, 2008 Share #1 Posted January 29, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) I did this test a few weeks ago to see if the noise level actually got better with the new firmware. I used R9/DMR + 35-70 at 70mm and f/5.6 on a tripod. Mirror lock up and remote release were used. The lighting was ugly ambient fluorescent light. With each firmware version 1.1, 1.2, and 1.3 loaded on the DMR, pictures were taken at ISO 100, 200, 400, 800, and 1600. The shutter speeds were 1s, 1/2s, 1/4s, 1/8s, and 1/15s respectively. The resulting DNG files were developed using C1 v4 with sharpening and noise reduction (both luminance and color) turned off. The same white balance setting was used for all files. The files were not altered in any other way (no curves or exposure adjustments). Here's the scene: The 320x320 pixel square in the middle was used to construct the following matrix. The firmware version runs from left to right, v1.1, v1.2, and v1.3. The row are, from top to bottom, ISO 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600. I think there is a subtle but real decrease in the noise level with v1.3 at all ISO levels. Along with that, I do think there is more blurring effect as well. Here is another matrix. What do you think?
Advertisement Posted January 29, 2008 Posted January 29, 2008 Hi psquared, Take a look here DMR Firmware ISO Noise Comparison. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
robsteve Posted January 29, 2008 Share #2 Posted January 29, 2008 Peter: It looks like the ver 1.1 images are sharper too. Is it possible the focus got moved or is it just the firmware?
topoxforddoc Posted January 29, 2008 Share #3 Posted January 29, 2008 Peter and Rob, I agree. Less noise on v1.3. Charlie
psquared Posted January 30, 2008 Author Share #4 Posted January 30, 2008 Rob, I didn't touch the lens after focusing the first time. It's possible, and looking at the pictures again, probable that the focus plane was slightly different in later pictures. I probably nudged the camera (or the tripod) a little while either changing the ISO level or changing the firmware. Peter
