Never been to New York, going to take the family in November, and become tourists.

Which camera should i take?

The D-lux2, easy to whip out, plus simple to knock off some video too.

The Digilux 3, i love this camera, but it's big, plus how safe is it walking round with.

I know this isn't a tourist information portal, however if any of you have some unusual places that should be visited, then please let me know.

Thank you.

I'm going to need to take both aren't I...

Manhatten is generally quite safe, and I guess as this is your 1st time to NYC, you'll spend a bit of time there.

Brooklyn, where my family live is quite safe, and you get some quite cosmopolitan shots, though not sure if this is where tourists on a limited time frame would spend much time.

My NY family wouldn't take me to the no-go areas, so I can't advise you as to where not to go.

Definately take both, and only use what feels comfortable at the time. and you've always got your backup with you.

What bag do you carry the D3 in ?...... (I use a Crumpler Zieube which looks very downmarket) , I sometimes swap to a very old tatty looking bag when I feel the need to be inconspicuous.

However NYC is FULL is camera shooting tourists......and watch out for the cows.....they're everywhere............

I live in Connecticut but go to NYC weekly to do street shooting. I carry my M8 out in the open.

New York is now one of the safest large cities in the world. If you are concerned about losing your camera... put it on a rider on your homeowners policy. If you're concerned about your personal safety, just stay in the heavily traveled parts of the city.

All of NY is a photographers paradise... people everywhere. The only place I've every experienced any negative reaction to my shooting is in Chinatown. Suspect that is from illegals who are concerned.

I live in NYC and there are so many people here with every sort of camera that there is really no reason to worry about bringing a Digilux 3. I'm out on the street with my M8 all the time.

Just like woman's handbag, I wouldn't hang my camera bag over the back of my chair in a restaurant but I wouldn't do that in any city. I also don't leave things like cameras in hotel rooms anyplace around the world NY not being any different.

New York still suffers from a reputation that is about two decades out of date. For the last decade it has been the safest large city in the USA (cities with population of at least 100,000), and one of the safest in the world. It’s crime rate continues to drop. Some of this is due to draconian efforts of our prior mayor, now running to be nominated for president, but most of it reflects two historical happenstances in the early 1970s that had their measurable impact beginning about 15 years later, before our prior mayor was elected, and impacting reduced and reducing crime rates in nearly all of the US. In 1972 lead-based paints were banned in the US. Very small children who ate chips of pealing lead-based paints (they taste sweet from the lead) in 15 to 20 years will have greatly reduced impulse control and greatly increased likelihood to be violent. As more and more lead based paint disappeared with building renovation and replacement, the impact of the ban increased. A the risk of initiating a controversial flaming, in 1973 Roe v. Wade (the legalization of abortion in the US) was passed, and beginning 15 years later fewer unwanted children were around to misbehave. There are credible studies to support both positions.

Now to the city. Take both cameras. Sometimes the D3 will be just a bit too unwieldy and the D-Lux will do much better. What to see? Scan the 11 pages of New York photo galleries on our site for a few ideas. Beginning in the middle of the 4th page I took almost all the photos using a Panasonic version of the C-Lux-2, so your D-Lux will often be fine. But, the D3 will let you reach further and do much better extremely low light photography.

And as with any big city in the world, keep aware of what is happening around you, and avoid areas that look especially dicey. As actor/comedienne Lily Tomlin said in about 1980, “Being in New York is knowing where your purse is at all times.”

Let me know when you’re coming. Perhaps we can meet.

I'd be interested in seeing the studies. Links?

fwiw LA suffers from a similar reputation. We really don't take cover from weapons fire daily and I walk unarmed through any part of the county. The traffic however *is* as bad as they say.
