Keep the Digilux 2 or take the deal for the Digilux 3

Take the deal. I received my Digilux 3 last week and its absolutely cracking. Whilst there may be a 4 or similar coming out later this year, you can bet that you won't get the same great deals that are around at the moment. It's a great camera with a fabulous and extremely bright lens.

When the D3 came out I bought a D3. Had both cameras for a week, shot mostly with the D3, and I returned it!!! Too soft, too noisy, too big. Pics were good with some post processing but jpecs right out of the D2 were on color and good! For the cost and size a 5D does much better, But then it does not have a red dot. It iwas very hard for me to do because I have shot nothing but Leica and MF since 1967 but I did the unthinkable and went with a 5D for a SLR. Sold my DMR (it gave fantastic pics but oh so big and heavy!)

So think about what you really are going to do. How are you going to use the D3? Will the D2 do the job as well or better? Do you like post processing? The D3 is going to be old technology very quickly. The D2 is going to be classic I think - already is starting to be. If it is the prestige and red dot you are after and the ohhhs and ahhhs of people looking at your camera, then maybe the D3 or next generation is for you. If it is pics that stand out at reasonable size then the D2 can't be beat. I do agree the buffer is an issue IF you are a rapid shooter and or shoot lots of RAW. But for high res JPGs up to 12" by 16" I still have have not tried another camera that will beat the D2. Wish Leica had continued the design theme of the D2 instead of the crazy D3 clattertrap!

What an interesting thread!

If I've counted properly - of those who expressed a preference (in classic survey-speak) 5 went for the D2 and 6 for the D3. 4 seem to have both and I can't really decide which they are "voting" for.

So, yer pays yer money.........! Or not, as the case may be!

There can never be enough cameras.

Nothing is going to make me part from my D2, in fact, I'm watching e-bay for some "uninformed person" who thinks that their immaculate example had "broken" and then I'll get the sensor changed and have two. :D

Since buying the D2 I've had: an FZ-30 which was changed for a V-Lux 1 and very recently I've added a C Lux 2; now that really is a SMALL camera. Whilst I was initially attracted to the D3, when I saw one, the size finished it for me. :)

The same is true for me. And besides the size, also the shutter noise, i.e. mirror slap noise, kept me away from the DL 3. I also did not feel comfortable with the feeling when manually focussing with the kit lens, because the optics is driven by a motor instead of my hand.

Although it would be good sometimes to have a higher useable speed than ISO 100 and a RAW buffer, I still stick to my DL 2, until an equivalent successor will come some day.

Best regards, Peter.

I just got a used D2 2 months ago for a great price. I love it! It is cool looking and its 2 ways flash is really amazing.

I never touch a D3 but tried my friend's L1 for couple days. I won't consider it a great DSLR and its viewfinder is way too small and dark. I use Canon 1Ds II for serious work but for easy shooting, I will grad my D2 or GRD with me.
