davidrsi Posted January 17, 2008 Share #1 Posted January 17, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) My Digilux 2 failed Christmas morning and it won't be home until the end of May. I could take the deal for a new Digilux 3 or I could wait. What do you folks think? Those who traded in for the Digilux 3... are you happy you did? Could you compare image quality for me? Ease of camera use, function, etc.? Very much appreciated. The other things is waiting for Photokina and see if there is a Digilux 4 coming out. Advertisement Posted January 17, 2008 Posted January 17, 2008 Hi davidrsi, Take a look here Keep the Digilux 2 or take the deal for the Digilux 3. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!

goodbokeh Posted January 17, 2008 Share #4 Posted January 17, 2008 Go for the D3! It's a great camera and I enjoy mine much more than the D2 I used to own. The 4/3rds system is a winner in my book. The D3 is the first digital camera I can truly say has made me feel ok with not using film as my main photo medium. Even if a D4 comes out later this year the D3 takes great photos now and will continue to do so for many years to come.
spylaw4 Posted January 17, 2008 Share #5 Posted January 17, 2008 For once I completely agree with stnami! My repaired D2 is due to come through the door today! Once it is back I am going to seriously consider whether I will keep my L1, despite its undoubted qualities. I am not totally abandoning 4/3, but for the moment it's on hold until we see what transpires over this year especially at Photokina
ptomsu Posted January 17, 2008 Share #6 Posted January 17, 2008 I would not go for the Digilux3 today anymore. This camera is outdated and there are much better models available from Panasonic and Olympus if you are looking to really enter the FT system. rob_x2004 Posted January 17, 2008 Share #8 Posted January 17, 2008 Ah theres an L10 with the same set of lenses? Half the price. Twice as good? Beats me. How long did the L1 last? Flippin heck! Third of the price on eBay.

David David, I urge you to search the forum because this topic has been discussed in depth before. Any arguments for trading earlier must surely be diluted with time. I kept mine after repair and it is in constant use to my satisfaction.
goodbokeh Posted January 17, 2008 Share #10 Posted January 17, 2008 I would not go for the Digilux3 today anymore. This camera is outdated and there are much better models available from Panasonic and Olympus if you are looking to really enter the FT system. The only 4/3rds body that I would rate above the D3 (IQ potential, AF speed and viewfinder size and brightness) would be the new Olympus E3 and it's made in China, which leaves me cold for a number of reasons including early production bugs. The Olympus E410 & 510 have 10 MP sensors with compromised dynamic range compared to the D3/L1, so I rate their IQ lower. The L10 Leica zoom is not the equal of the D3's in term of speed, resolution, or control settings. The L10 body is nowhere near as nice in construction. No other offerings have the wonderful shutter speed dial and aperture ring either. Get the D3, you will be happy you did!
lkfosterl Posted January 17, 2008 Share #11 Posted January 17, 2008 I took the offer after sending my D2 back for the second time. While I miss the small size of the D2, I really like the D3. The raw buffer alone is worth price, let alone the better lens. No more waiting 6 seconds for a raw file to flush, which means I can now bracket shots. Much less distortion at the wide end due to the 2x lens factor versus the D2's 4x also. And I hate to say it, but I miss the EVF on the D2. The D3 view finder is fairly dark and doesn't offer nearly as much information or previews.

The D3 viewfinder is darker than I would like also but I adjusted to it quickly and I have a very good work flow with the camera that makes me not miss using my R8 too much ;-)
leicagator Posted January 17, 2008 Share #13 Posted January 17, 2008 Go for the Digilux 3! You will always find newer (and cheaper) cameras with "better" specifications..., but if you like the handling (which I do) and the overall look and feel - it is a great camera with a certain "personality" and fine IQ. I enjoy taking pictures with the Digilux 3 more and more - and this is the most important thing!
spylaw4 Posted January 17, 2008 Share #14 Posted January 17, 2008 I took the offer after sending my D2 back for the second time. While I miss the small size of the D2, I really like the D3. The D3 view finder is fairly dark and doesn't offer nearly as much information or previews. Well - my D2 has just arrived back and I must say it feels good to have such a (comparatively) light and compact camera again. Comparing the two, the L1/D3 regrettably feels a bulky ton weight in comparison. I find the D2's EVF acceptable and I don't find the viewfinder on the L1/D3 dim at all. While I, like others, find the D2 write speed slow I am prepared to put up with it due to the exceptional quality of the images that result from the lens. So although the 14-50 lens is remarkably good (and I very much like its results), I must however disagree about it being better than the Vario-Summicron. The two lenses paint different pictures so to speak.

jbstitt Posted January 17, 2008 Share #16 Posted January 17, 2008 Keep the D2. Mine came back and I gawked in amazements when I pulled up the first shots in 6 months with it. 5D, G9 - they are good, but there is something sparkling about the D2 pictures. Sort of like comparing old Nikon film shots with old M film shots. It come through in prints too. And hay, if you must have a D3 like camera you can buy an L1 for equal to what the cost of the upgrade is. Then you got the lens if a better body come along. nhmitchell Posted January 17, 2008 Share #17 Posted January 17, 2008 John's got the answer. Keep the D2. Buy an L1. (I bought one when Amazon was selling them last month for $799.) Best of both worlds. Two great cameras. Two scary good lenses, You win! Nick

dugby Posted January 18, 2008 Share #19 Posted January 18, 2008 I have both a sensor repaired D2 and an L1. Whilst it is well understood that the images from the D2 are superb, those from a L1 are even better, in ALL aspects of the image. The D3 / L1 outshoots a D2 most of the time, from percentage of the images I accept as keepers, I get many more from my L1 than my D2. The D2 has the obvious tangible benefits of dramatically lighter and smaller than a D3, and a D2 is TOTALLY mechanically silent for those discreet shots during theatrical performances or classical music performances that I attend to support my daughter-in-concert. I must say I am concerned that my D2 is likely to suffer another sensor failure in the next 2-3 years, IF the replaced sensor was manufactured to the original productionisation specifications. It is possible that those D2's repaired early, may have got the "spare parts" from the original D2 batch manufacture, that would have included spares of the original sensor. So over a couple years may fail again. If Leica after becomeing aware of the root cause, has been able to re-negotiate with SONY to alter the manufacture process of the replacement sensors, then those repaired D2's should have a longer life. Now that I have a 4/3 lens, I guess my only hope in this 'throw away society" is that I may get a few extra years from it with a D4 or D5, or 4/3 Olympus body later.
