Has anyone noticed Leica cameras appearing in television commercials and fashion photography? I have noticed several times in the last couple of days. Guys driving around in fancy cars taking pix (Digilux 2), a photo of a woman sitting at a table in a café with an old M3 on the table (high end fashion store in a shopping mall), and some other television commercial I just saw (D-Lux2).

 

The more I notice it... the more I notice it.

I've noticed a number of things that evidence great marketing sophistication. First, have you seen the new print ads that Leica has taken out in high-end travel magazines, such as American Express's Travel & Leisure? It is an ad ostensibly for their sports optics, but they also make clear they are a camera company. Additionally, the D-Lux 2 and now the C-Lux cameras were given away to those readers who send letters into Travel & Leisure and have them published.

 

I have no doubt that Leica has shared photos and information on the M8 with long lead publications so that, beginning in October, there will be plenty of stories about the camera.

 

And yes, on the old Leica forum, there were, from time to time, compendia of all the different movie and other references to Leica cameras.

:-) I wouldn't refer to it as product placement because Leica seems not to be involved. But I came accros some fashion shots and ads in a lifestyle magazine w/ models fumbling Leica M.

 

I would not refer to Leica as a luxury brand though. This, I think, has to be evolved by further marketing and ads.

My experience has been that, if a camera is required as a prop in a shoot, the photographer supplies that camera. If Leica is making marketing deals with product placement, I think we’d see advertisements from them that refer to those other placements. It is possible these are cases in which the photographer or person “styling” the shoot wants the cachet of a Leica to establish the image of the photo. Relating a known brand of high quality (Leica) to one’s own can enhance the image of the advertiser.
