wilfredo Posted January 15, 2008 Share #1 Posted January 15, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) I'm wondering what the general feeling is about Leica Fotografie International? I got an offer to subscribe for 60.00 Euro but with the wimpy U.S. dollar that means each issue costs close to $12.00. I'm hardly ever impressed with the photography they feature so I'm wondering what the general feeling is on the forum, especially those who are up against the stronger Euro? How many folks actually subscribe? I suspect the real value of LFI is technical coverage of Leica products. That's not enough of an incentive for me. I may be in a minority here. Advertisement Posted January 15, 2008 Posted January 15, 2008 Hi wilfredo, Take a look here Lfi. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
rsolomon Posted January 15, 2008 Share #2 Posted January 15, 2008 i would agree the value is in the technical content of the publication -- im considering droping my subscription. IMO There is higher quality and more current information right here on the forum. With the knowlege of the people on this forum who really needs LFI
Ivar B Posted January 15, 2008 Share #3 Posted January 15, 2008 I agree that the magazine is not that interesting and hardly worth the money. I subscribed so as not to miss any news etc., but with todays spread of information on thre web that is hardly an issue. If you are interested in technical and/or historical issues, the Viewfinder from the Leica Historical Society is much more interesting.
gravastar Posted January 15, 2008 Share #4 Posted January 15, 2008 I have to admit, I used to subscribe but no more. I don't find the picture content or choice particularly inspiring. I'm in London often enough to be able to browse issues before buying (rarely). As others have said the internet keeps us abreast of technical developments. Bob. andybarton Posted January 15, 2008 Share #5 Posted January 15, 2008 I am a new (Summer / Autumn 2007) subscriber, and have to say that I am enjoying it very much. I wouldn't buy ANY magazine for news items these days, but the features over the past few issues have been very interesting. As for the quality of the photography within, I couldn't possibly comment
stuny Posted January 15, 2008 Share #6 Posted January 15, 2008 For those of you not subscribing, Lord Barton is represented in the results of the Barnack Challenge. Even so, I'm not certain I'll renew my subscription.
ndjambrose Posted January 15, 2008 Share #7 Posted January 15, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) Well, I disagree with some of the above. Personally, I find the technical content of little value. By the time it comes to press there's nothing there except old news. And the 'how to' articles (e.g. on workflow or colour management) may suit people new to the technology, but is of limited value or interest to people who already know how. The reason I buy LFI is for the photography only. In my opinion it's very good. Thinking of the last 6 editions, there are none in which I think the photography is uninteresting or uninspiring. And the quality of print reproduction is very high - expensive stock and rich colour reproduction.
Joop van Heijgen Posted January 15, 2008 Share #8 Posted January 15, 2008 LFI is rather irrelevant for Leica photography and photography in general! Indeed, the magazine is not that interesting and hardly worth the money.

Marquinius Posted January 15, 2008 Share #10 Posted January 15, 2008 I just buy it sometimes, but I really seldomly have a feeling of "wow - I'm glad I dodn't miss this one". Recently I bought two issues of a magazine called "Silvershotz" at the local magazine shop. Now there's some photography! I think their website is Fine Art Photography. stunsworth Posted January 15, 2008 Share #11 Posted January 15, 2008 Like Andy I'm a recent subscriber and I think the magazine is an excellent blend of technical articles and photography and will be renewing when eventually the time comes to do so. The photography I've seen so far has been excellent.
marknorton Posted January 15, 2008 Share #12 Posted January 15, 2008 I like the magazine and it gets more of my attention that most of the stuff which passes across my desk. I even get my long suffering PA to file the issues in date sequence. It's not so expensive. $12? Just think, give up on one trip to McDonalds a month and it will pay for itself in no time, and better for your waistline and blood cholesterol level. masjah Posted January 15, 2008 Share #13 Posted January 15, 2008 I like the magazine and it gets more of my attention that most of the stuff which passes across my desk. Just think, give up on one trip to McDonalds a month and it will pay for itself in no time, and better for your waistline and blood cholesterol level. I rather enjoy it too. I've subscribed for a number of years now. I generally enjoy the photographs, but, even when I don't, I still take great pleasure in saying "What a load of pretentious nonsense". I agree also about the good quality paper stock and reproduction. I think it's worth the money.
calshot Posted January 15, 2008 Share #14 Posted January 15, 2008 I have subscribed for some time now.Overall I like the magazine I find the quality of paper and printing good. Generally I do not find much that I cannot read and enjoy.Even stuff on M8 is interesting even though I don't expect ever to own one.To me It doesn't seem to have the problems of other mags, which need so much advertising to help finance. So I think I would subscribe for another year, Rob
dhsimmonds Posted January 15, 2008 Share #15 Posted January 15, 2008 I have subscribed to LFI for a number of years and like any other mag. some issues are better than others. Overall, the quality relects the Leica image and name and occasionally you find a real gem of information buried away in there! I shall certainly renew..........even though the British Pound is following the US Dollar and sinking against the Euro!
wilfredo Posted January 15, 2008 Author Share #16 Posted January 15, 2008 I see I'm not in the minority. I've been subscribing to LFI for at least 3 years. I think the publication has a lot of potential but it doesn't seem to have a real driving force behind it. Yes, sometimes the photography is good, but I can only remember one WOW issue in the last three years. In general, I see better photography on this forum. If it were available locally on the news stands in the U.S. I would probably by an issue here and there, but I really don't think it's worth the 60.00 Euro's. I'm going to take a break from this publication. Cheers, Wilfredo Benitez-Rivera Photography

bill Posted January 15, 2008 Share #18 Posted January 15, 2008 This has developed into an interesting thread. LFI appears to divide opinion like film/digital RF/SLR and all the other topics we endlessly debate My take on it is as follows: I used to subscribe to LFI for years. I stopped about 5 years ago, when I felt it had become boring and repetitive, and the rate of translation errors had reached the point that it could not be ignored or tolerated. The whole thing felt amateurish and slapdash. I returned this Winter after years away, driven, I confess, by the article on the One Challenge. I was pleasantly surprised. I am not sure if that is because LFI has improved - I suspect it is more because the intellectual and pictorial standard of AP, PP etc has gone through the floor. For now, I am happy with LFI. Those who are not, I suggest you walk away for a while and come back - I think you will be pleasantly surprised... Regards, Bill
flavio Posted January 15, 2008 Share #19 Posted January 15, 2008 I am subscribing since1983 and have to say that I like it mostly. Yes, sometime some photos published are not what I prefer but of course this is not enough to stop the subscription. I like most of the technical articles and some advise. Lucklik Posted January 15, 2008 Share #20 Posted January 15, 2008 I have a subscribtion for almost 4 years now. Not all issues have the same level. (I remenber an article on Aperture, which gave me the impression that the writer never had used Aperture) I'm not impressed by the digital Leica's (exept D2 and M8 the first getting old, the latter being too expensive for me) this makes many articles less interesting for me I don't know yet if I will renew my subscribtion.
