Apart from a small area of runway, this is all that remains of RAF Greenham Common, home to nuclear cruise missiles and an amazing peace camp in the 1980s.

We would see the missiles being taken out in convoys on manoeuvres on the Berkshire roads when I was a young man.

I was thinking that the base could be brought back to life in a year or two, if necessary. It would need to be completely rebuilt, though as only a small patch of runway is left. The newts and badgers would be pretty peeved though.

It's the largest area of heathland in Berkshire now.
