I treated myself to a quick indulgence during this Veblenian weekend (in the USA). My first 3rd party Chinese lens - I just wanted to taste and compare and at a $159 - could not resist.  Right out of the box - major disappointment as upon mounting  the lens, there was a Fresnel-like prism diffraction issue on screen and in the images. Firmware was the correct version per website and was planning to return it. Reached out -with no expectation of response -to TT Artisan and surprisingly, they got back to me the same day with an as yet unpublished firmware update. Thereupon - a revelation. It worked, flawlessly. Excellent customer service by the way.

This image is a snapshot going out the door, no prep, no lights, and no post-processing except for the conversion of SOOC color image to BW.  SL2-S, TT Artisan 75 F2 L-mount @F2. It focused flawlessly using eye/face detection. On my calibrated screen, I am desperately looking for flaws or overt differences between this "cheap" lens and my very non-cheap Leica lenses and Voigltander mid-ground glass. Ignoring the characteristics specific to certain pieces ( ie. my noctilux ) - this lens is thus far very much holding its own. How it continues mechanically and as I put it in more challenging lighting scenarios, remains to be seen. That portends a continuing revolution in image rendering capability in "old fashioned" photography. A new era...indeed. Fascinating...

The "eye detection" auto-focus feature  on the SL2-S honed in directly on the eyes - and though may seem a bit "soft" in this low resolution upload, they are in fact - tack sharp. I was surprised both because the SL2-S is supposed to be slow to autofocus and the lens itself is "cheap"...
