Hello everybody, I am Nico from The Netherlands and I read this forum for quite some time now. I have never participated in it, but now I have a question about a Leica IIIa. The top plate has the serial 220756, but after removing this plate, I find the serial 358674* on the chassis.

I know there is a lot of knowledge here, so I hope there is someone who knows  how this could have happened.

Regard Nico

220756 is from 1936, and 358650 is the last IId from 1948. Note there is a star behind the number, which was used in case a number was issued twice.

Maybe the 220756 needed repair in 1948, and due to unrepairable damage in the body, got new insides with the number 358674*, and * because a camera with this number was never issued?

shall be II, without d. According to Hahe highest serial within II was 358700. Top plate had another number, milled off. With some portion of imagination I believe to recognize there "70" in the middle. You may try to make another photo, different illumination, another angle and higher resolution. Maybe then more digits will be clear

Thanks for the responses.

I didn't realize that there was another serial number, that has been milled off. I took a photo with different light and I read the number 357731, I am not sure about the first digit.

do you really have 1/1000 on the speed dial? Can you set it? Shutter will not open on 1/1000th, special screw on the pawl is  missing/was never installed there. Pawl is for II/III, without 1/1000

this is the pawl for IIIa/IIIb, with the bolt for 1/1000

Thanks again for all the replies, I learn a lot from this discussion.

The speed dial is modified, the 1/1000 is milled off and filled with metal. It doesn't look nice, but maybe it's worn out.

Some thoughts:

This Leica started it's life as a IIIa in 1936

As mentioned in an reply, the IIIa could have been sent out for repair around 1948, where they switch the body with body 357731 / 358674* (I don't know why they changed that number).

Because they used a II body, the speed dial is modified.

This sounds logical to me, but it's all assumptions. What do you think?

you may check with Leica history of camera including dates when it was in repair with Leica. Camera has a mixup of various parts and as such would never leave the factory or Leica service.

Hello,

I asked Leica for any information about this camera and they only could tell me that it was sent to Köln in 1936. There was no information about service or repairs, so I think the research stops here. I had hoped for more, but it is what it is.

Anser from Leica:

I want to thank you all for your contribution.

Best Regards

Nico
