When this happens, it’s usually an indication that the distributor has been given the nod about the release of the next best thing and is seeking to sell down stock. 
 

I’ve no idea if that’s the case but I recall they did something similar with the M10 series. 

Or they just aren’t selling! It’s the same in the USA and most other markets. 

Funny thing about Leica is a new product seems to drive up sales of the last previous version release as there are so many “buy it quick it will be the last classic” curmudgeons lol

Given that NZ has only about 5.5 million people in, by the time you deduct non photographers, photographers who don’t want an M, photographers who want one but can’t afford one etc etc the pool of buyers is pretty small. 
 

There’s very little retail competition in NZ for anything. Even the supermarkets are all owned by only 2 companies. 
 

When the Leica distributor starts giving away free things, there’s a reason. Even the Safari is included and that’s barely been out 6 months.

The roller comes free with 'Leica M6, M11 series (excluding M11 Black), M11-P series, or SL3 models'.

Are all those cameras doing badly? More likely (IMO) it's the PD roller that is a drug on the market - bulky, pricy, limited brand recognition. And who goes into a camera store with the intention of buying a standard roller? For a lower price here I can buy the top of the range Samsonite roller - which I've had for may years of airline battering without problems.

Mind you, if you buy a Q3 or Q3 43 you get a free Sofort - probably another drug on the market.

It took years to eliminate the freezing problem and the magenta shift…if something similar happens to the M12, the camera will be interesting for me 2 years after the release. I hope Leica learned a lesson and won‘t release the M12 before checking all the problems and difficulties.

I think that Leica is well aware of the need, has been so for the last 100 years, but the customer should be aware that it is completely impossible for a small producer. How many cameras to beta test? One hundred maybe but probably a lot less. For how long? A few months or so. Then release thousands for intensive use…. Even Apple software from a giant corporation with virtually unlimited resources is never bug-free straight out of the gate.

Which, of course, is why it took two years to fix.  Bugs that are easy to reproduce are much easier to eliminate.  I never saw the freezing issue, but I did experience the file corruption one, which was far, far worse.

One more time, just for nostalgic accenture ....

Do this:

Go to your friendly local search engine and type in virtually any digital camera make and model you can think of, followed by the word "freeze," or "freezes,"

.... and see what you get. 

Haven't tried it with other terms, but I expect you could replace "freeze" or "freezes" with just about any other imaging malady that has afflicted the owners of digital Leicas, and find similar results. 

That's why they use firmware to store code in cameras. It can be updated.
