We gaff taped our cameras for Holi. I am interested to find out what caused that filter damage?

My guess is that any modern camera would have protected him equally well.  See the story of how Don McCullin was saved by his Nikon F:

Although getting a Nikon to use as a 'flak jacket' for your SL3 might be a tad excessive.
