Are there any electronic components on the circuit near the shutter dial or under the camera top?

I can see in my Leica R8 Disassembly - Part 1 video, around 5:20, that there are indeed a few interesting, surface mount electronic components on the flexible circuit in the top cover. Adrian, if cleaning the shutter speed dial does not restore full functionality, we should look at the 16 pin integrated circuit associated with the dial (closest to it). Can you read and advise the characters printed on it please? I'll do some digging on this in the meantime.

Regards, Rick.

Unfortunately I couldn’t disassemble further, a PH000 or finer screwdriver is probably needed for that, and since I don’t really need shutter speed higher than 1/1000 on manual mode anyway, I’m not ready to take more risk.

I have cleaned the silver “orbit” for the dial but without any effect. The mechanism is probably more complicated. The FPC connecting dial and main circuit on top plate has several branches, from my perspective what matters is probably the ones buried underneath the cross-like branch, which I can’t reach.

I accidentally damaged a small component due to mistakenly recognizing a very small part as dirt. At the arrowed area of p2 there was a small black thing connecting the FPC branch to the silver metal. I don’t know what might it be or if the missing of the is the origin of error.

Hi Adrian. Don't worry too much about the small black thing. I'm quite sure it was a plastic locating nub, just like the others to be seen in your photos. It's there to help assemblers keep the flexible circuit in the right place while screws are inserted. No biggie. This mechanism looks like it's the sensor for the light metering selector switch. Hence the three tracks on the flex-tail, each carrying a signal for one of the metering patterns. There'll be another flex-tail or wire going to the underside of the sensor.

Can you manage to take a photo of the 16 leg integrated circuit closest to the shutter speed dial? Another nice and clear photo of the whole, central part of the circuit would help me look at all of the components for any signs of damage/failure. Thanks. Rick.

p.s. In your second photo, under the red arrow, did you notice the screw next to the cross-shaped circuit? It looks like the plastic bracket for this screw is cracked, possibly from over-tightening. I mention this because it might be an indication of a previous attempt to clean the shutter speed dial. Perhaps. This reminds me a similar dial on my Metz 54-MZ3 flash, which has resumed its misbehaving after being cleaned a couple of times. I need to do it again and a better job this time.

As for R8s and shutter speeds, I can't remember using a speed higher than 1/250th for a long time. Maybe 1/360th, but that'd be it. So I understand your disinterest in going further. 🙂 No need.
