A question regarding the DOF preview function. When I assign it to a button and press on the button a green F appears next to the F stop and I can see the DOF change as I stop down (SL AF lens). This is fine.

When I press the button a second time a green s also lights up next to the shutter speed value. What is this for? It doesn’t seem to change anything.

Thanks for the help.

As DOF is a subjective phenomenon that depends on magnification throughout the image  chain, I see very little use for a preview on the small EVF screen. It will always appear to be much deeper in the viewfinder than it will be on a final print or even a monitor of any decent size.

the second time you see the green light is simulating the shutter speed of your choice. You see, when you have a static subject in front of you, nothing happens while you click twice the DOF preview because your subject is static and there is no movement. Try to focus on a moving subject and you will see very clearly that the shutter DOF preview can now show you how the movement will be depicted on your final image.

This feature is very smart and underrated I believe. Had no idea about it and all of the sudden everything clicked while I was having my 6 month daughter moving her hands and legs up and down on the floor. Very helpful to see which f-stop and shutter speed would give you a sharp DOF and also how movement will be (or not) frozen.

Thanks, I had not understood this.
