costa43 Posted Friday at 12:29 PM Share #1 Posted Friday at 12:29 PM Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi all How ok is it walking around with M gear in Cape Town nowadays? I'll be heading there next month with my wife. I have been before but that was 10 years ago. Our accommodation is in Camps Bay and Franschhoek. Besides the standard precautions of not walking around dodgy areas at night, is there any other considerations that people with some experience of using their expensive gear there would suggest? Cheers!

wagner Posted Friday at 01:52 PM Share #2 Posted Friday at 01:52 PM Hi Costa! Walking downtown is pretty much safe. (Security every ~50m) Walking in the suburbs -Woodstock, Observatory- could be a bit more problematic, but there are safer areas as well. I would say, the city improved the general safety in the last 10 years quite remarkable. Regards, Torsten
archive_all Posted Friday at 02:47 PM Share #3 Posted Friday at 02:47 PM I was there earlier this year but brought the SL2 and I had no issues between downtown Cape Town, Camps Bay and driving around to other towns like out to Cape of Good Hope etc. We took a number of Ubers around town and sat outside at restaurants and I never felt that it was riskier than other major cities. I'd exercise normal precautions.

Cheers! I spend 1/2 of every month at our marketing office in CPT. The city's relatively safe, having said that, there are surrounding no-go areas where crime is more localised, mostly drug-related. Camps Bay & Franschhoek are very popular with tourists, but always be aware of your surroundings. Best advice? Use common sense, as you would in any other city in the world these days. Keep your gear in an under-stated, low-key camera bag the doesn't scream expensive gear inside. You'll love CPT, spectacular scenery, great restaurants & excellent wine! Cheers! Do not neglect to visit Stellenbosch and surroundings and False Bay/ / Simonstown Do a tasting and lunch on one of the many wineries. But beware of the drink and drive restrictions. 1
