The vast majority of my photography is either shooting the local music scene (SL3-S) or then casual landscapes, abstracts and candid shots (Q343 or SL3). I always shoot in single shot mode and typically use manual BBF for landscape and a mix of that or facial recognition for everything else. I much prefer to feel and catch the moment with a single shot than use burst mode. I find it more rewarding and gives a stronger connection to the moment.

Last weekend my daughter had a Roller Derby match so I decided to give it a try with my SL3-S and 90-280mm. Clearly this was a situation where I would need to use burst mode. I went for 5fps (fastest speed that would still give me AF) and used the AF-C Tracking mode. After some tuning during the first minutes I settled on an exposure of ISO4000, 1/400 and f4 for all of the remaining shots (with LR adjustments depending how close the players were to the overhead lights).

I was pleasantly surprised how well the camera was (usually) able to aquire focus, although I did miss quite a lot of shots where I could not quite aquire the focus in time.

If I would do this regularly (unlikely, processing the resulting 100s of files to find the best ones was not a lot of fun) I would likely go for a different camera (better AF, faster burst rate) and lens, but was happy to see that I could still get some pretty nice shots.
