ynp Posted October 1 Share #1 Posted October 1 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello, I would like to upgrade my original SL and buy either an SL2 or SL3 to use with my S lenses and my two L mount lenses. Is there any difference between the two newer SLs related to the autofocus with the S lenses? Anything else to consider? thanks, yevgeny

helged Posted October 1 Share #6 Posted October 1 No problems on my side with SL2, SL2-S, SL3, SL3-S and S-lenses - almost always shooting the S-lenses with manual focus and focus confirmation on SL. Re SL2 vs SL3: SL2 has Multi-Shot High-Res Mode (187 mp, I think); the SL3 does not have this feature (but 60 mp is still more than most of us need).

Thank you very much for your detailed and informative response. I will look for a clean SL2 locally, it makes more sense to skip a generation. yevgeny

Main (?) disadvantage with SL2 are more noise at high ISOs and, clearly, less advanced (continuous) AF.
hoolyproductions Posted October 2 Share #9 Posted October 2 I have no experience with S lenses but can offer a view on the cameras you are looking at. Between the SL2-S and SL3-S I find very little difference in the output, both are excellent in low light, the SL3-S has a slight edge. Autofocus is a little faster and a lot more reliable in low light with the SL3-S. In my experience, the SL3 is a big step better for low light compared to the SL2, almost at the level of the SL-S camera. However many people are very happy with the low light performance of the SL2, particularly after LR denoise, so you may not care about that. Lastly of course there is the upgraded menu system, control buttons have moved and then tilting screen which I find really handy in some situations and have enabled shots that I would have missed otherwise.
Stuart Richardson Posted October 27 Share #10 Posted October 27 (edited) A little late to the party, but I never encountered any problems with my S lenses on the SL2. They worked very well. The only thing I will say, however, is that I did not wind up using them all that much in the end before I replaced them with L mount equivalents. They perform very well on the SL2, but they are very large and heavy for their focal lengths on 35mm. This is especially true for the wide angles, like the 45mm, 35mm and so on. The most useful for me were the 120 and 180mm, but in the end I wound up getting the 90-280mm zoom and 105mm, but of which usually prove more useful. I mostly used them with AF, and they worked just fine, if slowly. The 120mm in particular stands up well to the 187mp multishot. The black and white photo below is a crop out of the larger photo from the 120mm at 5.6, using multishot. Welcome, dear visitor!
