I’d like to add a 90mm to use mainly with my SL2(S). I’m torn between the Leica Summicron-M 90mm f/2 ASPH and the Leica APO-Summicron-M 90mm f/2 ASPH — or maybe someone has a completely different recommendation? Any advice based on experience would be great.

you're asking about M lenses in the L mount lenses section :)

the APO 90-M is great, have you looked at the image threads? thousands of images taken with many versions of 90mm M lenses

Well, there have always been adapters (by Leica and others) to mount M lenses on the SL series. An SL user can certainly ask about them.

But in the M line, there is only one APO-90mm-Summicron-M ASPH - introduced 1998, still in production, and still the only one.

The other 90mm Summicrons for M (1957, 1980) are neither ASPH nor APO.

I would add to the suggestions the 90mm Macro. Granted it is a slow lens, but it has razor sharpness and the macro ability. I use it on my SL2 with the Leica adaptor and am very happy with the results and there is the joy of a very small lens one can stick in the pocket.

The Apo M 90 f 2 is an excellent lens, very sharp and compliments the SL2S camera.

IF you get a good example - I had one and Leica never was able to get it to focus to infinity. In the end I traded it in - the shop gave me a good price as it had been "recently serviced by Leica". 🙄

That is interesting J. The first copy of the Apo Summicron M 90 that Leica Australia sent me had a hair embedded in the front lens glass. I didnt realise the hair until I was out in the bush taking landscapes with the lens. It was a shame because otherwise it was a very good copy. The replacement lens came awkwardly in an unsealed box without the thin grey cardboard box which new lenses come with. It turned out to be an excellent copy albeit Leica gave me no reply regarding the presentation of the box.

I have probably "out lensed" myself now seeing I have the 135 Apo Telyt M and the Apo 90-280. I have essentially blocked any thought of buying the 24-90 which by all accounts is an excellent Vario lens by Leica.

The Summicron-M 90 F2 vII, the so called "Screwhead", although big and heavy, is still an amazing lens to be used also adapted, it renders beautifully wide open for portraits (with a bit of Mandler's glow) and becomes very sharp when stopped down. Having had all three, it's the one I decided to keep as I like to shoot portraits mostly with it. The fact that is also the cheaper one doesn't harm either 🙂

The vIII or pre.-ASPH should suffer of a bit more CA but is more compact, the APO is the way to go if you want a super sharp more "modern" rendering right from wide open, but I'm not 100% sure that the bokeh is as pleasant as the vII.

I have an M 90 f2. It's an older 1980's one, version III based on the wiki links above. It's ok. On my SL2-S I use the Sigma Contemporary 90mm f2, and the results are very nice, in my opinion nicer than using the M 90mm on the SL2-S.

I have used Apo-Summicron-R 90 (ROM) as well as many other R-lenses with R-Adapter L on SL with great results. The size of the R-lenses matches well with the SL bodies. Thanks to IBIS even many of the longer focal length lenses are very convenient to use.

Did anybody compare the results from this lens with the Panasonic 85 SL?  That is an awful lot of money to pay for three letters and the native L lenses often outperform their M brethren

Anything in the last 30 years in the 75-105mm range in M or L mount is likely to be excellent optically. And some much older than that too. The biggest choices are the exact focal length, speed, af/mf, close focus ability and apo or not.
If you are set on M mount, it is very hard to go wrong with the 90mm APO Summicron. I have one and also the 90-280 and the M lens is still quite a bit sharper. The older summicrons are softer wide open and have more color aberrations, but are still good. Meanwhile, if you just want a good lens in this range, Sigma’s 85mm, 90mm and 105mm lenses are all likely to beat most M mount lenses in performance and do it with AF at a lower price. I can personally vouch for the 105mm APO Macro…it is on par with my APO Summicrons.
