Are you talking (Leica S prime vs zoom) from personal experiences or from thinking?

I have used the 70 as one of my S lenses since the S2 area. So I know the look it creates quite well. I also own the 30 and the zoom. I habe never compared those directly, I assume the 30 might be a little sharper than a zoom, but the iq of the zoom I have not found lacking. But i am also not a corner pixel peeper.

I still own my S equipment since I love the lenses, but now use the X2d more often because of better AF and ibis and smaller size.

It’s been discussed before that the S zoom does have issues at the corners in the wider side, which can be for landscape work not as pleasant.  It depends on what you are shooting.  The primes tend to get the corners sharper at f/8 or f/11 if you want the full frame.  The same has been true of zooms in the SL and R lineups - all when compared to primes.  It’s just the way they work.

I’m a little like @Stuart Richardson in that when I am intentionally on a photographic trip, I take different gear with me and I really don’t care what the weight or size is because I want a specific set of shots.  When I go on vacation I take a more minimal apprpoach and with a few small primes might take, for example, a 28-50-35 MATE for the M, or the 80-200 zoom with the SL / R.  In those cases I know the limitations of the lenses and use them with that in mind.

@Einst_Stein, you are taking on a good experiment to find out what you’d rather use when going on a trip.  That’s the only way to see what you might leave at home the next time.  (I laugh as I write this, because the same is true with me and clothes!  I always find a couple things I should have just left at home and try to pack smaller the next time!). Curious your results when you get back.

I did it before. Ironically, when I left wide angle at home, I regretted. I then left long lens, I regretted  again. So next time I take zoom. But then I missed primes.  Yes, the next time I carried all, … again the circle repeated.
I guess the important thing is to ignore the temptations of what I don’t have and be happy of what I do.
