Now that a Leica S3 is about £ 7000.00 second hand, would you still upgrade to that rather than the SL3?

If you only need shift (and no tilt) then the Mamiya 645 50 mm f/4 Shift (via the S-Adapter M645) might be an option.

I have that lens and my experience is that I most always had to use some kind of sharpening tool. True that I started using it with the S2. The experience is better with the S3 because you can focus at 100% with liveview

I am also London based pro with S007 and S lenses (tho fairly recently only). I like your work and your testimonies in this forum previously helped me make that leap, even in 2025!

The S (or SL2) images I get to show to my colleagues  - even if only as finished&polished jpegs images, at around 30MP, on an Ipad -  regurlarly "wows" them... and they are Sony A7VR, X2D and GFX users.... Especially with LR denoise and super details tool even the S006 I tried before settling for the 007 had that effect.

I think you can get the same "effect" on your clients with your current gear (007, SL2 (not S). I am about to try how it works on an ipad air M1 with the USB cable and C1 for ipad. Fotos is nice but I wouldnt really feel 100% at ease using it with a client breathing on my shoulder.

SL2 allows you to push to 187MP and can be used with people as long as they hold the pose.

Below a mix of 006 and 007 images because why not.

I will buy Leica S3 when the price is 70% of the Hasselblad X2dii.

Try MPB.

Used Hasselblad X lenses with larger aperture or zoom are usually much more expensive than Leica S, 2X, maybe,

But the small aperture lenses have dropping price like crazy, even cheaper than Leica S.

Well, I stocked up in S lenses when the prices looked rock bottom to me and guess did the right thing, as it looks that now they are creeping up again slowly (at least for what I'm seeing so far) and also the Kipon adapter (and the new Xpimage, to be tested) are making them also a viable solution on the Fuji GFX even if Leica should decide to not "revive" the S system in ML form.

XCD lenses prices are still through the roof (about 1000 euro for a slow 45 F4 used pancake lens, a good as it can be..) , I snatched a used X1D just to try the system and I'm really tempted to just buy a dumb S lenses adapter to just try them wide open on the thing 😀 (with all the limitations of the slow readout of the X, that is).

Is there such an adapter?

Yes, XPimage produces one, you should be able to find it on Amazon (not exactly cheap though, about 200 quid for a "dumb" metal adapter, but a tleast it looks and should be good build quality).

The one thing to consider the most is that the X1D would only use the electronic shutter in that case and the sensor readout is very slow (300ms), so everything moving (including camera excessive shake) would most likely result in shots that will suffer from rolling shutter (will anyway test it with another dumb adapter that I have as soon as I get the camera).

I have the 14-24 for the SL2 (S), also a canon Shift lens, 24mm. I then use an adapter to put my S lenses on the SL2 (2). So I have the 35, 70, 120, 180.

I think I have decided to wait abit and buy an S3 which I'm confident I will be happier with. The SL3 is eventually come to me, but for now. I like the S3 more. Just wish I could put a shift lens on it for commercial work.

The TS 120 won’t cut it for you?

At the end of the day, the S system is still hard to invest in if you have nothing and are starting from the ground up.  Adding to an existing S system is easier and if you have the workflows and experience, then it is worth it (in my opinion).

I was never fully satisfied with the SL2 as I didn’t like the dynamic range.  The idea of the higher resolution shots was nice, but for moving ocean is useless.  The SL3 has the same character (IMHO) as the M11 and S3 although I still find the S files more flexible in post processing for whatever reason, maybe in my head.  The SL3 is not my favorite body, but is my favorite sensor.  I still have trouble with it using gradient filters and getting exposures just right as I really have to check for shadow and highlight clipping and the highlight metering doesn’t always clip where I want it.  But the SL APO’s are certainly incredible.  I think the APO 90-280 is also pretty incredible for long reaching landscapes at infinity.  For example, Antarctica, where most of my shots were between 160 and 280.

There is the character of the S lenses, and that’s what the system was all about once you hit the medium format at a time where that was important.  I don’t know if it is today, but I still love the optical view when setting up filters for a shot.  I just find it easier and it flows back into my film workflows as well.

Seems like almost all of the used Leica S3 bodies have been snapped up on the used market in the last few months. This happened to coincided with the release of the X2D II. Just a coincidence? Was there some hipster influencer that starting using an S3 that I missed? :)

Don't know & havn't seen anything like that, but pass me a word in case you are looking for one (I have a S3 that doesn't get as much use as it should...).
