LocalHero1953 Posted August 12 Share #1  Posted August 12 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) I have photographed quite a lot of dance, but almost always at as fast a shutter speed as I can manage: 1/250s appears to freeze motion enough unless you look closely. Here I have deliberately tried longer exposures to try to capture the missing element: movement! It is moderately effective (IMO), but perhaps overdone. If I can find a willing subject, I will try two other techniques: (1) flash combined with long exposure; (2) ask the dancer to hold a pose, move to another, and hold that one within a period of 1-3 secs. Both techniques might provide one or two clear 'poses' alongside the blur. Has anyone else developed an effective technique for capturing movement in dance? Please add your results here! LocalHero1953 Posted August 12 Author Share #3 Â Posted August 12 I met Prune Vidal exhibiting in Arles a few weeks ago, she gave me the idea for the technique I numbered (2) above. She didn't use it for dance, but for this kind of nude photography. (It was more effective seen in print than on her website).
HuntingSand Posted August 12 Share #4  Posted August 12 Interesting observations (and thanks for the link to PV's site). I think I'm sort of in the middle here, with some of the dance elements in focus, but some unruly element entering the scene (often the hair, but also a piece of cloth, a sleeve, a shawl, something along those lines). One example (with the CL), where the "stable", choreographed and controlled motion meets with or is veiled by the completely anarchic. I believe your slider is perhaps experimenting more towards the latter? Sounds like fun...  Welcome, dear visitor! LocalHero1953 Posted August 12 Author Share #5 Â Posted August 12 Yes, your photo shows or implies movement very well. Real energy! Hair is a good movement indicator!
