How do I turn off clipping (blinkies) when viewing images. SL's menu does not seem to work (see below)

As a rule, I tend not to use clipping displays either when taking or when viewing images. I manage contrast and exposure in my own manner and find the clipping display to be an annoyance, a distraction as well as being overkill. I am much more interested when taking images in composition and am confident that with my routine any clipping in an image is likely to be trivial (and mostly does not appear at all).

NOW PLEASE..................I am not looking for a lecture on why I SHOULD use clipping (before anyone is tempted to deliver one!) 😉 Nor am I looking for the comment that if my routine mentioned above works, then blinkies should not appear and therefore will not be a distraction.

I have a SL type 601 and having done some research online, I have gone into the menu to turn off clipping in CAPTURE ASSISTANT section of the menu and also turned it off in LIVE VIEW. I then save this as my profile 1 (together with other preferred settings such as ISO etc)  When I check settings subsequently they show as off.

Now here's the thing..............when I check actual images ( for example one in which I have an overly bright light and which has been deliberately over-exposed as a test, I find that clipped areas still appear on screen as blinkies when examining the image on screen after taking BUT does not show up in the VF before taking it.

Again - when I then double check my settings, I find that yes, the clipping option has been turned OFF in capture assistants and likewise YES it has also been turned off in live view. (And YES I did save these saved in a profile !!!!!!!!!!!!!) What the hell is this camera doing?

Any ideas would be appreciated please?

u already checked this i assume? in which case maybe a factory reset might help...images already recorded when clipping display was on will prolly playback with the blinking even though you switched it off in the menu.

Yes as stated I have turned this setting to "OFF" in the Capture Assistants menu in settings and also for view mode. And the photos in which the clipping appears are new ones taken today as I experimented to turn the thing off - multiple times. So, they are not old ones taken when some earlier settings might have been active. In fact, the weird thing is, I believe clipping was previously NOT appearing in Live View when reviewing images but more recently has somehow turned itself on. God knows how as I certainly have not turned it on. And it is now there - even though I have been using the same profile  -  a profile in which it was turned off.

Are you sure that you are in the correct user profile?

I don’t recall there being a separate setting for this in view mode, rather the playback mode follows the Capture Assistants menu. I don’t have my SL3 with me to check, that would be handy if so.

In any case, when you are playing back an image, press on the Fn button and it will alternate between the different playback views (including one with no info, just the photo). Once you have selected the view you want, resave your profile - that should fix it.

I think you have hit the nail on the head. I tried hitting the info button when viewing the image and it turned off the blinkies. It seems to me to be passing strange and emblematic of the weird way Leica (and maybe German engineers in general) over-engineer and over-complicate EVERYTHING. I should know - I drive an Audi.😄

But specifically with regard to this issue, why would you have to turn off a function, then turn of the option to view the function's results then still have a tripwire which allows you to accidentally turn it back on again. Weird - thy name is Leica.

I think there must be something wrong with your set up, because when I turn off something in the capture assistants it no longer appears when alternating views with the Fn button. Any way, at least you got rid of the blinkies 😁

You can switch clipping/ zebra off in camera settings—>capture assistants—>info profile 1,2,3,4–>clipping/zebra—>off

At least, that is how it works on the SL2S

I note that you are using an SL3 - I have a "humble" SL type 601. I suspect the firmware and hence the settings are different between the two models in this series. (I have the last version of type 601 firmware installed incidentally). Maybe it's an example of a weird firmware choice in a first model camera which has been abandoned / upgraded in later models.

As I have noted elsewhere, I now suspect that settings in my SL type 601 are different than those in later models in this series. As noted, I turned off the "blinkies" setting in the Capture Assistant menu, then found and turned off a similar setting in the Live View menu but when I pushed the "info" button when reviewing the image on the LCD the "blinkies" were turned back on - and not just while the button was pressed,  notwithstanding that I had already turned them off in the above two settings. This confusing arrangement was and is weird.

Yes, that is correct. My 601 does exactly the same. I cannot say that I regard this as a problem.

Yes I see your point. I only found it to be a problem because I did not know this is how it worked................and being a logical chap I failed to guess that it would function in this rather odd and to me somewhat illogical manner (with other cameras there tends to be one one/off setting not multiple settings for the same function). I trust that now I know I will be able to work with it in future. 😁

I am glad you sorted it out and escape any lectures on the value of histograms and clipping blinkies. 

I don't really like the blinkies either however I configure all the SL models to sequentially move through the Fn selections including the 1st with level indicator and all other settings on. The second one is with Histogram and Focus peaking, the third is only histogram only and the fourth everything is turned off which is used to view my images on the train going home from a city walk. On the 601, I had one of the Fn selections turned off so that cycling through three options instead of four was quicker to return to the main shooting profile, the one showing the levelling function.
