I got myself a m10p - I'm very excited about it, thank you so much for all your advice here! what's the ideal lens for m10p? (I guess questions never end when it comes to Leica ) You have the answer in your past. What lens(s) did you shoot with previous cameras? What motifs do like to shoot? These are the two factors alone that answer your query. Not as difficult as you thought! 🙂 The box that you hang the lens on is immaterial.

IkarusJohn Posted June 25 Share #62 Posted June 25 (edited) Well, back in the days of compact film cameras, the standard was 35mm; with cellphones, particularly the iPhone, the standard has become 28. I think part of the issue is to identify a focal length which inspires you. Also, bear in mind that a “standard” focal length for a 35mm sensor is its diagonal (ie, the square root of 24 squared + 36 squared), which is 43mm. So, 35mm is slightly wide angle and 50mm is slightly telephoto. All that said, the M system’s strength is at the wide end. In terms of lenses, I’m not sure your budget will extend to Summicrons or Summiluxes. Some of the Elmarits are fantastic - the 28 in particular seems well loved. Alternatively, look at Zeiss (very good ZM lenses) or Voigtlander (I have no experience of these). Edited June 25 by IkarusJohn

IkarusJohn Posted June 25 Share #64 Posted June 25 +1 for the Biogon 28/2.8 and also for the Distagon 35/1.4, though a better pairing for the Biogon would be a 50 Summicron.

The 28mm Ultron is a very high performing lens. Some will say too high even. It comes in two types. Type i and type ii. Same optics but a slightly different design. The main difference from a user perspective is type i has a filigree lever to focus and type ii has a focus tab. Just to confuse things there is also the first iteration of the 28mm Ultron which has a different optical design. It is regarded as being of lower technical performance, especially in the corners. (I guess questions never end when it comes to Leica ) You'll probably never know how good a decision you made, getting an M10P over an M11. Having bought and used an M11 for a short period, that's the advice I'd give to anyone considering a Leica M for the first time. You dodged a bullet - well done.

erl Posted July 3 Share #70 Posted July 3 Are the images better or worse, from an M11 or M10? 😍 Or do they depend on the hands that hold them? 😋 Whatever your chosen tool, Happy Imaging. It's really up to you, not the camera.

I had always understood that the OG iPhone frm 2007 had a 28mm equivalent focal length, but then when I went to check it was less than clear. The current iPhone Pro has 13, 26 & 77 equivalent focal lengths, apparently. Whatever the answer, my point was that, with film compacts, the standard focal length seemed to be 35mm, whereas phone cameras have a wider field of view as standard. To prove that point would require more patience than I currently have.
BWColor Posted July 4 Share #73 Posted July 4 (edited) Congratulations on your new Leica. Re. Lenses… I own Zeiss, Voigtlander, Leica and M-Hexanon lenses and there are some gems in all of these brands. My favorites are likely unrelated to what you prefer, but you can see images from all of these lenses on Flickr.. Not all lenses work equally on different generations of Leicas. Some of my favorites are the Biogons, but I understand that they don’t work well on the M10. I would buy lenses used from MPB, or KEH where you have a no questions asked return policy. I’ve only sold lenses to these vendors, such as my 28mm Ultron, but I can tell you that they accurately evaluated my gear. Nearly all the Voightlander lenses are great performers and on par with the Leica or zeiss lenses. I have owned many. The first Norton 50 f1.5 Ltm renders so like Leica lenses in my opinion. Most of the zeiss and voightlander glass apparently has a modern look. An image shot on any 28 looks better than one not shot. The cheapest voightlader a 40mm f2.8 is a great lens. The 28 Ultron is nice but I found the 28 color skopar II to be great and less money. i found myself fortunate to be able to pick up a 35 Summilux (1st asph version) and after DAG did his magic with focus calibration it’s truly spectacular. Do I notice the difference over the Voightlander? Sure but I was never unhappy with the color skopar. at the end of the day, I suggest buying used and inexpensive and when your happy with the platform upgrade!
