I have a V2 50mm Summilux and picked up the 12586 lens hood. The hood doesn't fit with the after market clear filter the lens came with so I removed the filter to install the hood. It almost seems the hood itself can accept a hood. Is that the case? If so what size filter will work?

Thanks in advance.

The Ver 2 50mm summilux takes a E 43 leitz filter that is the only filter I know that works with the Leica lens hood. It does not go into the lens hood.

It looks like the lens hood itself has threads. Is the case?

Yes, but I think is simply a manufacturing fact : the base with pins is screwed onto the hood itself (at least, so is in my 12521, the older version of 12586, with chrome base ring, see wiki).

About 3rd party filters, I seem to remember that at "m8 times" (UVIR filter mandatory) I found a B+W E43 filter that was declared as "slim"... apparently it could fit V2 Summilux with hood,, but at the end I picked the Leica original.

Yes, the 12586 hood can be unscrewed, though I don‘t know any filters which would fit: Serie VI is too small, Serie VII too large. In the lists of filter sizes published by Leica the Summilux is only mentioned with E 43 filters.

The older E43 filters from Leitz were slim, so the clips of the 12586 will pass it and fix on the rim of the lens. There was a newer version of E43 filters from Leica (e.g. UVa 13206) which leave a rim between the filter mount and the lenses front, where the hood will fix as well. Modern B+W filters, which are not marketed as „Slim Filters“ will leave no such rim, so the clips of the hood will pass but can‘t be fixed
