Hi guys,

I was lucky enough to be given the 'runner up' for this years National Geographic Traveller competition in the landscape category.

It was a great image to shoot at the time, it took a matter or hour to get everything in the shot that I wanted. The peak of Re Gusela being lit up with the head torch, the car trails that took nearly a 3 min shutter to allow for the car to traverse the pass, the -14 degrees too. My friend stayed on the viewpoint while I ran to the mountain and lit it up, we were talking on the phone to communicate position and timing.

It was shot on the Leica SL3 and Sigma 16-28mm, a hidden gem in the L mount system.

Last year in 2024's comp I won it, so technically I am getting worse 😉

Impressive!

I assume that you used a physical mask to shoot the sky and then shoot the foreground. With a 3 minute exposure (ND filter?), I'd expect to see the star trails.

Hey Andy,

Yes a 3 shot image overall, stars, trails and mountain (main body of the image) and the torch.
