How do you know at what serial number the new AF motors were introduced?

If you contact Leica with specific serial number, they will inform as to AF motor replacement status. New assemblies were officially announced 8 years ago.

It is interesting that this is very different from an SL lens.  These lenses focus manually (mechanically) as well.  While I would prefer to have a working AF motor, I am glad that the lens would still be usable with manual focus.  That is different from every other digital lens system out there (AFAIK).

The 120mm lens was introduced about 2010, making it 15 years old.  It is interesting that they still had the electronic parts that long even after needing a new AF motor.

Not necessarily, as I noted earlier.  Some here have reported complete failure, unable to focus either way.

Mine got totally dead. My S100 failed on the original SL and stopped working even in the manual focus mode.  It was repaired several years ago by Leica.
