Advertisement Posted May 24 Posted May 24 Hi frame-it, Take a look here Fuji XHF-1 Half Frame. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Einst_Stein Posted May 24 Share #22 Posted May 24 (edited) I can't see the selling point vs. say, compact APS-C or M43. Is it smaller? cheaper? lighter? or what? I can get a NIKON 1 AW1 + 10MM F2.8 with less than 1/3 of price. Used, of course, but so what? It is even waterproof and shockproof. adding another $100 or less, I also have a 11-27.5mm zoom. Yes, waterproof and shockproof. Nikon 1 failed, what can make Half-X different? Edited May 24 by Einst_Stein

LocalHero1953 Posted May 24 Share #24 Posted May 24 (edited) The portrait aspect ratio is an interesting choice. Most people coming to photography through smartphones treat portrait mode (one-handed shooting) as the norm. When I use my phone I hold it two-handed in landscape mode (and I try to hold it straight and horizontal), and I think I get better pictures - but I suspect my prejudices pass most phone photographers by. A strong argument for portrait mode shooting is that most photographs are viewed on mobile phones - landscape mode photos are more difficult to look at. A question intended to start an internet war: what is a 'natural' aspect ratio and orientation for photos? Why have almost all cameras in history (except this one) taken landscape-orientation photos by default? Personally I usually take 'landscapes' (any scene where the environment is a frame) in landscape mode, often cropped to 16:9, and 'portraits' (any scene where a person is the main subject) in portrait mode, cropped to 10:8. But I wonder if I just lack the imagination to do anything different. Edited May 24 by LocalHero1953

I have been there, I had Olympus Pen half frame film, but I upgraded to Rollei 35. My 15years old grand kid decided to get Chuzhao, following his class mates. Out of the gate however near was quite right - a second iteration of either could have been much more successful. The Fujifilm X-half also seems to be an experimental craft that would benefit from user feedback.

We will see, maybe the feedback will lead to discontinue. Leica XU was discontinued after Leica realized that APS-C had no marketing benefits in front of their FF. Nikon 1 was discontinued after Nikon realized 1” format had no marketing benefits in front of larger format system platform. Weltraumpräsident Posted May 24 Share #28 Posted May 24 I think we are talking too much about Specs, Money, technical Image Quality, instead of the joy to use a camera. Some say you get the best pictures from cameras you like to use. That will not always be the same camera for everyone and i do not know if this Fuji will bring joy to use it to me. But I think it has the potential! Also I think, a lot of us made some of favorite pictures maybe already 20 years ago with 6mpix. Are they worse today because they miss technical BQ compared to what is possible today? Do you even think about that there is not that resolution or something else available? Me not i have to say. I am seeking for the fun back to take pictures at all. Maybe I lost it even, because I don't like to do it with my smartphone much. But the quality is ok, and i miss an emotional connection to my "real cameras" I want it back! And I don't care if it leads to lesser technical quality. None of the cameras from today can bring it back, or I cannot afford. So why not go for a different approach for an in my eyes low price tag?

But I'm questioning spending £600 on a camera with weird built in compromises that takes images that don't look as good as a phone image. I'd rather have an X100T, or a Q (1). People on this same forum spend 9k on a camera without a screen, go figure 🤷♂️ To add to that, among gen z and young people, the trend of the last 2-3 years is to use old point and shoot, which have skyrocketed in price. A Canon Powershot Elph 350 sells for about 400€. The point for users of these cameras is not about technical perfection, but the opposite. A look that is not the same smartphone look that you see in any other picture. Kind of the same concept behind the Lomography folks, but applied to digital. bobtodrick Posted May 25 Share #30 Posted May 25 I remember when the first Fuji X100 came out. All the ‘serious’ photographers, some on this forum said it would never sell…it was an expensive fixed lens ‘toy’ only the hipsters would like. Well we know what happened there 😂 On the day last week when the new camera was announced we had nearly a dozen inquiries as to when we would get them.

In fact, Fuji X100 was after Leica X1, 35mm eq lens. It looks like a Leica clone, and many people got it because of that, even the name was similar. X1 was announced in 2009, a year later, Fuji came with X100. Edited May 25 by Einst_Stein

The Fuji is called X100 because the Fuji mount is called X Mount since 1970, when it was called Fujica. All Fuji cameras start with an X, like X-A, X-E, X-Pro, X-T etc.

You're right, the video quality isn't going to be high enough for tiktok or insta folks and the 4x3 format is totally unsuitable too. Whatever Fuji's master plan is for this camera, it's not going to find it's success as a video camera

Fuji’s large sensor digital camera were called S something. Only after X100 turned to X, after a Leica X1. The rising of X100 was credited to it cloned Leica M’s outlook. More like Leica M than X1. All S cameras used Nikon F mount. The last two Ss (S5, IS?) were announced in 2006, 2007. The first Fujifilm X mount camera was Xpro1, announced in 2012? way after X100. It is the first true M clone (by the look) that has interchangeable lens, but not M mount. Edited May 27 by Einst_Stein
