Advertisement Posted May 22 Posted May 22 Hi frame-it, Take a look here Fuji XHF-1 Half Frame. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
FrozenInTime Posted May 22 Share #2 Posted May 22 Looks nice, but disappointingly lacking under the surface. The Ricoh GRIV, coincidentally just announced for autumn 2025, seems a better match for experienced photographers. Best value for money/performance compact camera in my eyes is still the Lumix G100D, which can be paired with compact m43 lenses like the 20/1.7 or 15/1.7 Summilux.

nicci78 Posted May 22 Share #4 Posted May 22 (edited) Fuji just made genuine half frame Pentax 17 great again. Just buy the real deal than this über pseudo fake analog camera. Which is not even half frame (1 inch sensor only) So gimmicky that I cannot understand the point. The camera has so low IQ that Chris Nicols (Petapixel) said that your smartphone will take better pictures... Jordan Drake (Petapixel) also said that you should consider that video mode does not exist, use your phone instead. Fujifilm continue to be Fujifilm, gimmicks first and lack luster optics in front of quite nice sensor (APS-C or GFX) or films (plastic glass with instax) Edited May 22 by nicci78
pierovitch Posted May 22 Share #5 Posted May 22 Each new release seems to offer less functionality for higher prices. Just hoping early web cam look nostalgia is not next. Sort of an app with prop toy camera.
FrozenInTime Posted May 22 Share #6 Posted May 22 A lot of the samples have clipped highlights. I think jpeg only is the biggest mistake: If not Raw capture, HEIF/HEIC 10 or 12 bit would allow some dynamic range headroom recovery and in-camera or App post-capture development of images to new 8-bit jpegs via different simulations and tone/exposure curves. But the only time Leica have released a camera that places having fun above being serious it was a rebadged Fuji This a is definitely a daft and deeply flawed camera but it's also wonderful to see a company who still want to design cameras that are just meant to be a bit silly and be enjoyed. I'm very much tempted.
JoshuaR Posted May 22 Share #9 Posted May 22 (edited) I'm tempted by this, I have to say. I like having a small, fun, snapshot camera. And this is TRULY small. And definitely fun. It's totally silly, actually, but that can be good. I'm not hugely concerned about image quality for this type of cam. I'd probably shoot it entirely in diptych mode, with ACROS or Nostalgic Negative and a time / date stamp. I own a Ricoh GR IIIx. I hardly ever use it. The problem is the back screen . . . I want a viewfinder. Even a tiny little 'hole in the wall' viewfinder like what's on the X-Half could be good. And, also, I don't find the Iix to be a fun camera. I find my Ms way more fun than the Ricoh. If I'm honest, fun is a big part of the reason I use the M system. Nearly $900 feels steep to me. In the past, I would've planned on picking one of these up in a year or so, used. But nowadays, supply is so often constrained that that may not be possible. Update: I just downloaded some of the sample images from DPReview, moved them into Lightroom, and applied some presets. They look pretty great, honestly! I have an M10-R and an SL2-S—so when I want to make beautiful images with the best possible image quality, I can do that easily . . . . This looks like the kind of camera I'd happily take to the beach with my kids. I think I may very well sell my GR IIIx and get one. Chris W Posted May 22 Share #10 Posted May 22 Too many odd compromises harking back to film cameras. I've had 70's film cameras that had more functionality than this. We're apparently going full on 'hipster' in the camera world.

Simone_DF Posted May 23 Share #13 Posted May 23 I think I'm going to buy this. It looks like a really fun edc camera to have with you. I think it's not meant to replace other cameras, but more as an add-on to your existing camera gear.

Chris is right there. I have just been looking at some samples from the X Half and if you're looking at 100% then my iPhone 15 definitely has the lead here on detail and sharpness. The combination of adequate optics and incredible computing power with software enhancements in a modern phone can produce images way above their pay grade. And yet this daft camera might just be the first time I pre-order anything. I know it's deeply flawed and I know there is a very large element of style of substance going on but one thing I heard got to me. "I don't want my personal photography to feel like work and this doesn't feel like work". I could never have one of these as my only camera and there will always be times that a quality output is what I want but being pushed to be less precious about the pixels in my family photos and more involved in simply capturing the feel of what's happening around me is something I can sign up to.
Chris W Posted May 23 Share #17 Posted May 23 2 hours ago, Simone_DF said: Which phone has a 1” sensor, and what’s the price. I have watched two of the best Youtube reviewers and both of them said the image quality was MEH. People carry their phone around and take pictures, I do, so why buy something extra that doesn't deliver as good an outcome. A whole bunch of new cameras are not for me I admit, a couple of them Fuji. So I shouldn't care, but it kind of worries me about consumerism, so many new cameras being launched every few weeks and there are probably already enough fantastic cameras to suit all of us already in existence. I understand the interest in half frame film, but half frame digital???
Simone_DF Posted May 23 Share #18 Posted May 23 @Dazzajl and @Chris W I do understand your points, and I do have an iPhone 15 myself, but I just use it to take some random snapshots, it doesn't inspire me to take pictures like a camera does. It's not just about sharpness and details, after all I already have the Q and the S5II for that. To me it's more about getting into a specific mindset, because that's the way my brain works, and that's something I cannot achieve with a smartphone. The two alternatives to this Fuji cameras that I could see as possible substitutes for myself are the Sigma BF or a Ricoh GRIV, which is still a few months away. 1
Chris W Posted May 23 Share #19 Posted May 23 I don't enjoy taking phone photos either. But I'm questioning spending £600 on a camera with weird built in compromises that takes images that don't look as good as a phone image. I'd rather have an X100T, or a Q (1). earleygallery Posted May 23 Share #20 Posted May 23 I think Fuji are aiming this at TikTokers, given the upright format it's ideal for them! Probably the oddest camera release in recent years, presumably they've done the market research to convince themselves that there's enough people out there to want one.
