Mounting CV 40/1.2 on SL2-s: coding and other issues

Hello,

I have an SL2-s, that I use exclusively with M lenses (due to their great compactness and since they will also mount on my M10p). I am considering a CV40/1.2 (either the current series of the one that should come next month).

I try to get all my lenses coded, to some other lens of the same focal length, but that is obviously not possible with the 40mm focal length. I imagine the "next best" bet is some kind of 35mm. Would this be fine, in particular for IBIS ?

More generally, I found very few comments on CV40/1.2 on SL2s, so I am always interested if there are specific issues that I should pay attention to.

Coding wont help as SL series dont detect these - only the M do. 

You can select a 40mm Summicron, but the lens profile of that (for auto correction by your imaging program) will probably not be right.

As far as I can see the M-to-SL adapter by Leica does read codes. Through this adapter, my SL2-s sees and recognizes my 35/1.4 FLE 1 and my 21 SEM. I also have my CV 28/2.8 Skopar coded as a 28 Elmarit. Same for me CV 50/2.2 and my CV 75/1.9.

Ibis is reasonably tolerant here. If you “miscode” a lens by not too much, performance may drop a bit, but not dramatically.  The obvious solution is of course to wave the camera around a bit less.

That is not true. The Leica adapters read and transmit the codes

Great, this is what I was expecting (also because lenses typically differ from their specified focal length by a small margin).

Another related question is whether SL's embed lens profiles into the image files like the M series is supposed to do. Is this happening here ? If so, would a code for a closer focal length risk to actually cause unwanted corrections be applied, that could not be removed later ?

If that matters, I am always using the DNG format. I never use jpg.

For focal lengths over 35 or even 28 mm profiles are fairly irrelevant, after all, all M  lenses are designed in a purely optical manner and used on analog as well, as opposed to lenses designed for digital use. Profiles mainly address vignetting, nothing more. Even some (much)  shorter focal lengths are not really badly affected. My 12 mm Voigtländer  has only slight smearing in the corners. All in all, just put them on, using an original Leica adapter and you will be pleasantly surprised. Don't overthink.

Thanks! I just wanted to make sure that if I code a 40 as some form of 35/1.4 to fix IBIS, I will not break other things in the files. Anyway, it looks like I am a bit closer to a purchase of a 40/1.2 next month. 😉

@Xavier to keep IBIS happy you can set focal length without picking wrong lens in SL menu. Lens correction can be applied later in Lightroom by picking correct profile.

Thanks, but I am not sure I read correctly. Do you suggest that I set the lens in the menu when I mount it ?

I would like not to rely on myself thinking about making any menu setting whenever I mount a lens. I know by experience that I will forget to set up the right lens 90% of the time at least. This is how I started with my M9 almost ten years ago, and I got plenty of pictures recorded with the wrong profile attached to them.

Also, I am unsure how to avoid the camera from embedding a profile when a lens selection is made (in the menu or with coding). I should add that I only want to keep IBIS happy, and if possible to have consistent EXIF, but I do not care at all about the profiles. I would rather not have them.

That's why I also only set the focal length to the millimetre (e.g. 58, 42mm) I put it on a top button and it goes quickly once it's memorized. That way I don't have to use the Leica adapter, but can use a Helcoid for the better close-up limit.

The camera remembers and suggests the last mounted uncoded lens.
