The Chinese Year of the Rat starts on the 7th February this year. Our Beloved Leader, Ken, has decreed that this is too inconvenient, so London will celebrate on Sunday the 10th.

I usually go up for the spectacle, although I must admit I tend to avoid the sterilised jollifications in Trafalgar Square and head into Chinatown proper.

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone else was planning to go, and fancied meeting up for a pork ball and a pint?

Regards,

Bill

I think that can be arranged...!

I've got no firm plans for this; if it's wet I'll stay under my duvet :D

If it's ok, then I'd suggest something like rendezvousing in the Chandos at an appointed time and taking it from there.

Regards,

Bill

Brian, it's just off the north east corner of Trafalgar Square - in between St Martins and the ENO.

I was there just before Christmas and a pint of Sam Smiths bitter was £1.78 from memory. Remarkable prices for central London - or anywhere else in fact.

Cool.

Notwithstanding the Northern threadjackers :p that's 4 expressions of interest, including self.

As Steve says, The Chandos is at one end of St. Martin's Lane - 5 minutes walk from Chinatown, and about 3 minutes from Trafalgar Square. The Opera Bar upstairs is the home base of the very first One Challenge :D

  • 2 weeks later...

My very best wishes to all of you for a d-r-y Chinese New Year parade - on whatever date. Across the bay, in San Francisco, we are treated to the largest CNY parade in the US. And it rains on the parade more often than not. But I just love the enthusiam of all the youngsters marching in costume, on floats, marching in bands with wet instruments and enjoying themselves inspite of it all.

About 2 years ago, I was soaked to the bone (but saved the M3 and IIIb). Do any of you have any tricks on keeping your cameras usable during the rain? I've considered getting a Nikonos for peace of mind.

Best wishes!

do we have a definite location and timings...?

Bill suggested the Chandos as a meeting point, which seems fine me, but I expect we'll have to go elsewhere to find Chow Minh and porkballs.

I'd like to waste a few megapixels on Chinese-looking festivities, as I expect others would, so it depends if we want to attack the unsuspecting revellers together or separately or both. Sadly, my already suspect technique and eye normally suffer from ingestion of alcoholic beverages  so my preference would be to shoot early and meet for lunch and drunkenness in the early pm (and maybe stagger around giggling and shoot more later should the desire arise).

The festivities are planned to run between 11 am and 6 pm with a procession starting in the Strand and ending in Trafalgar Square with activity in Chinatown throughout the day.

So my (very loose) starter for ten is to meet at the Chandos at, say, one-ish with a view to finding some appetising vittals close by and play it by ear. Please feel free to bellow that my suggestion is a load of old bollocks - I won't mind :) - and suggest alternatives. Whatch'all think?

Pete.
