bill Posted January 8, 2008 Share #1 Posted January 8, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) The Chinese Year of the Rat starts on the 7th February this year. Our Beloved Leader, Ken, has decreed that this is too inconvenient, so London will celebrate on Sunday the 10th. Mayor of London - Chinese New Year I usually go up for the spectacle, although I must admit I tend to avoid the sterilised jollifications in Trafalgar Square and head into Chinatown proper. Anyway, I was wondering if anyone else was planning to go, and fancied meeting up for a pork ball and a pint? Regards, Bill

spylaw4 Posted January 8, 2008 Share #2 Posted January 8, 2008 Assuming nothing dramatic crops up, I could be tempted!
stunsworth Posted January 8, 2008 Share #3 Posted January 8, 2008 It's the same date in Manchester if anyone here is interested.
robert_parker Posted January 8, 2008 Share #4 Posted January 8, 2008 I might be tempted if Chow Minh is involved....
bill Posted January 9, 2008 Author Share #5 Posted January 9, 2008 I think that can be arranged...! I've got no firm plans for this; if it's wet I'll stay under my duvet If it's ok, then I'd suggest something like rendezvousing in the Chandos at an appointed time and taking it from there. Regards, Bill
spylaw4 Posted January 9, 2008 Share #6 Posted January 9, 2008 Chandos? How very Handelian! Where's that? Oh and I agree - requiring umbrellas is a no-no.
stunsworth Posted January 9, 2008 Share #7 Posted January 9, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) Brian, it's just off the north east corner of Trafalgar Square - in between St Martins and the ENO. I was there just before Christmas and a pint of Sam Smiths bitter was £1.78 from memory. Remarkable prices for central London - or anywhere else in fact. elansprint72 Posted January 9, 2008 Share #8 Posted January 9, 2008 It's the same date in Manchester if anyone here is interested. Just pulled out my mini-Filofax to make a note of the date and found that, in fact, it was tiny brand-new digi-cam in a brown leather case just waiting to be used. jlancasterd Posted January 9, 2008 Share #9 Posted January 9, 2008 It's the same date in Manchester if anyone here is interested. I'd be interested if the weather forecast is reasonable... Do you have an outline programme for the processions, etc?
stunsworth Posted January 10, 2008 Share #10 Posted January 10, 2008 John, I'll have a dig around and see what I can find. I know from previous years that the Chinatown area in Manchester can get very busy on the day. Difficult to photographic in fact because of the crowds. farnz Posted January 10, 2008 Share #11 Posted January 10, 2008 I'm definitely up for it; same proviso with regard to liquid atmosphere. Pete.
bill Posted January 11, 2008 Author Share #12 Posted January 11, 2008 Cool. Notwithstanding the Northern threadjackers that's 4 expressions of interest, including self. As Steve says, The Chandos is at one end of St. Martin's Lane - 5 minutes walk from Chinatown, and about 3 minutes from Trafalgar Square. The Opera Bar upstairs is the home base of the very first One Challenge Regards, Bill

farnz Posted January 27, 2008 Share #15 Posted January 27, 2008 Are we all mentally dusting-off our kimonos in readiness? Pete.
Fotobug Posted January 27, 2008 Share #16 Posted January 27, 2008 My very best wishes to all of you for a d-r-y Chinese New Year parade - on whatever date. Across the bay, in San Francisco, we are treated to the largest CNY parade in the US. And it rains on the parade more often than not. But I just love the enthusiam of all the youngsters marching in costume, on floats, marching in bands with wet instruments and enjoying themselves inspite of it all. About 2 years ago, I was soaked to the bone (but saved the M3 and IIIb). Do any of you have any tricks on keeping your cameras usable during the rain? I've considered getting a Nikonos for peace of mind. Best wishes!

robert_parker Posted February 3, 2008 Share #19 Posted February 3, 2008 A sight not to be missed! I was wandering down through Leicester Square on Thursday and it was well cold.... ...may well be a case for the Wooly Vest.. .... do we have a definite location and timings...? farnz Posted February 3, 2008 Share #20 Posted February 3, 2008 do we have a definite location and timings...? Bill suggested the Chandos as a meeting point, which seems fine me, but I expect we'll have to go elsewhere to find Chow Minh and porkballs. I'd like to waste a few megapixels on Chinese-looking festivities, as I expect others would, so it depends if we want to attack the unsuspecting revellers together or separately or both. Sadly, my already suspect technique and eye normally suffer from ingestion of alcoholic beverages so my preference would be to shoot early and meet for lunch and drunkenness in the early pm (and maybe stagger around giggling and shoot more later should the desire arise). The festivities are planned to run between 11 am and 6 pm with a procession starting in the Strand and ending in Trafalgar Square with activity in Chinatown throughout the day. Mayor of London - Chinese New Year So my (very loose) starter for ten is to meet at the Chandos at, say, one-ish with a view to finding some appetising vittals close by and play it by ear. Please feel free to bellow that my suggestion is a load of old bollocks - I won't mind - and suggest alternatives. Whatch'all think? Pete.
