This worker was enveloped in concrete dust as morning sunlight came through the trees. Q3 43 Welcome, dear visitor! NigelG Posted Monday at 01:56 PM Share #2  Posted Monday at 01:56 PM Hmmm…dramatic photo but I think in the UK water-damped blades are required by law and full PPE inc eye masks, gloves and respirators. If someone was doing this outside my house I’d be calling the Building Control department. https://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/indg461.pdf

I do plan to talk to the guy informally at some point about the adverse health effects of breathing the concrete dust. Our current administration doesn't believe in government regulations, so OSHA (Occupational Safety & Health Administration) is being dismantled and most of the staff fired. In other words, there's no more enforcement for violations like this. Edited Monday at 04:24 PM by fotografr

stuny Posted Wednesday at 11:31 AM Share #5  Posted Wednesday at 11:31 AM I hope he has a good mask and ear protectors. Those saws up close are putting out at least 120 db of sound pressure, harming his hearing in well under a minute.

He had no protection of any kind. Most importantly, he wasn't wearing a respirator or even a mask. Concrete dust contains silica which is used as a binding agent. It's known to cause COPD and even lung cancer. I have a good relationship with this crew because I've been doing a lot of photography of their work. I don't want to harm that relationship by reporting their unsafe practices, but when they get close to wrapping up at the end of August I'm planning to have a chat with the job supervisor and our city engineering people who hired the crew.
