You need to save your settings in a user profile to avoid losing them. Before updating you can save your profiles to a memory card.

I did that. Created two profiles and saved them. Then exported to SD. card, root. After firmware upgrade I imported them. All the settings were back except the button assignments. I reset them again and saved and exported them. See what happens next time.

I’m more concerned about being stuck in the language date/time page and not being able to get out except leaving the camera switched off for some time. Don’t expect that to be normal. Again I suppose I’ll have to wait until the next update and see what happens. I gave the camera a good workout for a few hours this afternoon with no issues. Lots of changing settings to see how it handles. Very smooth so no apparent issues.

Finally part exchanged all my Nikon gear and picked up my new Q3 43 yesterday.

Good decision! Enjoy not having to decide what to bring, just take your Leica and make pictures.

You just press the menu button and continue from there. No need to remove the battery.

Did you assign button settings in each profile? If not they won't come back.

Well, I'm grateful finally to have the ability to assign a button to snap a spot focus point back to the center of the frame (i.e., the oddly-named Toggle Focus Point function) instead of being required to use the touch screen.  But otherwise I don't see much of interest—at least, for a stills-only shooter.  We can't save human-readable listings of profile and button settings, zoom the EVF to match a virtual focal length, perform automated focus-bracketing, or confine the camera to either still photo or video mode.  And I don't detect any autofocus performance or functionality improvements: the Q3 still lags behind the (much less expensive) competition.  These are things that should be fairly straightforward to implement with a firmware upgrade since they all are based on capabilities the hardware already is able to perform in other contexts.

I acquired a Q3 for its ergonomics and I'm satisfied in that regard: it's a pleasure to shoot with.  But I would expect better software support for a camera with this price-point.

I just attempted the 3.1.1 update via the Leica Fotos App.  Now dealing with a black screen. Followed the instructions on the camera, turned the camera off then back on as instructed.  I've removed and replaced the battery, replaced the SD card with new firmware installed on the root directory, turned on and off the camera several times. I've tried with each of my three batteries. I've placed one of the batteries into the charger and try again in an hour or two. I've not used the Q3 for several weeks, so it is possible that all three of my batteries are empty, but, sadly, this is wishful thinking. This is unsettling.

Same experience. This update bricked my camera and it no longer turns on or shows any sign of life. Battery is fully charged. Tried everything.

I’m really sorry for those who have hit problems with the firmware upgrade. My experience across everything from M8 through to M10 + SL and SL2 and now Q3 43 has been flawless, with a gradual progression in functionality.  I don’t think this is just luck - but might relate to the cofidencecthat comes from decades of cheerfully tinkering with computers and operating systems…. However, just to comment on @ckern’s post, I don’t share his disappointment here.  While he’s right that we can’t save a human readable list of profiles and button assignments, it’s simple to export these to a spare SD card and store that somewhere safe. Likewise, video mode can be effectively disabled by re-assigning the button that invokes it in Default mode to another role - (PROFILE) in my case.  I’d also say that Face Detect works really well and admit I’ve never bothered with AFi or AFC so can’t comment on how good or bad they are.

However, post isn’t a rebuttal of a fellow user’s post - their experience is what it is and I can’t challenge that.  Rather it’s an attempt to rebalance the narrative and to give Leica a bit of kudos for ongoing improvements. I bought the Q3 43 as an alternative to carrying my M10-R + 35 & 90 on treks and around town. I wanted the APO lens, close focus, AF and general walk around usability, with sufficient resolution to crop in.  The camera gives all of these in spades, and with a bit of work on settings and button assignments it does everything I needed, and doesn’t get in the way!

Enough. I hope everyone can sort out the problems they’re having, but would always recommend spending a few hours working through the manual and setting the camera up to meet your needs. In my experience the Q3 series is worth the investment in time.

Maybe I’m missing a trick. If I inadvertently swipe the LCD left to right or vice versa it toggles from photo to video and back. Is there a way of preventing it from doing this? I would prefer it if the change from one to the other was a result of a conscious (intentional) decision on my part rather than some unintended, accidental, behaviour.

Updated my Q3 43 by SD card, no problems*.

No need to preemptively save your profiles: the update process prompts you to do so. It doesn't reload them afterwards though - you have to do that yourself.

*other than MacOS, once again, getting in a tizzy because I didn't 'eject' my SD card before removing it. When will they enter the real world on this?🙄

Yep, did that several times. Didn’t do anything. Pressed every button on the camera several times. Switched camera on/off. No difference. As soon as switched back on still stuck on same page. Only after leaving off for about an hour did it clear it. This also happened to @FrankU in the following thread.

He fixed it by removing the battery and leaving for awhile.

Updated on Friday via the app. No issue, was done quite quickly.
As I'm quite new to the Q3, I decided not to save the profiles so I can start again from scratch. That's the plan for today....

Thanks. I thought I did but can’t be 100% sure. I’ve done that now and saved and exported them to SD card. I can call them both up and all settings as expected. Just have to wait and see if all’s well at the next update.

I disable the LCD for normal use (other than for image review) and have a profile which enables automatic switching between EVF and screen when I want it.  That might help. Page 66 in the manual - “EVF extended”.
