Sid has plenty more to say but the gist is that 'standard' lenses were standard because of their evolution and not because they mimicked the human eye. He does comment that not all designs (Petzval for example) were as similar in terms of field of view. But as a timeline the following is a very simplistic view of the order of lens evolution:

Standard lenses

Long lenses

Wide angle lenses

And the most recent evolution of lenses has been of the ultra wide-angle zoom, which has progressed significantly over the last decade or two.

The main point is the standard lenses render a more lifelike and natural image with less distortion than other focal lengths…📷

I’m including buildings to show how little if any distortion is inherent in this 50mm lens…📷

The Summicron 50/2 rigid has little distortion indeed but so does a wider lens like the Summaron 35/2.8 or even the Biogon 21/4.5. The later has much more vignetting though and the rigid is the only standard lens, the way i understand it at least.

The 35mm and 21mm doesn’t have the natural perspective of the 50mm…!

Sure, except when using the perspective control feature of the M11 but this is another story.

Perspective control is a feature of the M11. My M240 has not it and i suppose your M-D neither.

Perspective is a bit like depth of field in that it depends on the viewing distance .....

I concur…👍
