M10-P Safari: yes or no?

I’ve been offered a mint (appears unused) M10-P. Has box but not papers sadly.  
 

I’ve always wanted one of the Safari versions and as far as I know there isn’t an M11 version and if there was it would be a lot more money, especially after recent price hikes. 
 

Is the camera worth buying given the age, obviously no warranty etc?

I would take even with no box if priced accordingly.. provided from trusted seller

but the m11 safari coming sooner

A working M10 or even M10P at decent price is worth buying, absolutely. Don’t pay extra for the Safari version, though. The pictures it makes are no different and it’s a cosmetic step backwards.

Kiwimac,   It might be worth it, but I would ensure you have both a written Leica warranty and solid return policy in writing if buying from a dealer.  A private sale always has risk as the "warranty" might not be valid or honored should the need arise to have service by Leica.  Just my experience.  r/ Mark

Yes it’s from a dealer (not a branded Leica shop though - there are none of those in New Zealand). 
 

Being second hand (they’re selling a large collection on behalf of a deceased collector I believe) it probably (need to check) would have 3 months warranty from them over and above any statutory protection you’d get under consumer law. 
 

I checked the warranty. 90 days.

If you can afford it and are aware of the limitations and really want it.. why not! (given previous things said about warranty, known dealer etc). Maybe the only thing is if it really is unused for a long time the battery could be dead? But I would say that should fall under the 90 days warranty, no?

The age of the camera is not really relevant in my opinion, there are still plenty of people happily snapping with M8, M9, M240 etc. Some people even actively avoid the M11 for various reasons and prefer the M10-R/P's. A friend of mine is loaning a digital compact camera from me that is from 2004 and is happily using that for instagram / tiktok stuff. What is age really, especially age on an unused product. 

For what it's worth, I'm happy with my M10-P Safari and still use it despite also having M11 cameras. Mine does look used, and it just makes it look better. 

Do you think you would be missing out by not having an M11-P Safari instead? Would it be worth the extra money for you?

I think M11 Safari, assuming they make it, will be very costly. The normal bodies aren’t far short of NZ$20k now so I think they’re very soon going to be simply too expensive to buy new. 
 

I’ll go and have a look at the camera during the week if I get a chance. I think it’s probably slightly over priced but the fact that there aren’t many and even fewer that haven’t been used probably pushes the price up. 
 

I’ll see. It’s the old conundrum between head and heart. Head says buy a Q3 43. Heart says buy an M despite it’s well known limitations. 🤣

I schemed about that very camera, but felt the price was beyond me. I drooled over it in March when we were in the shop, and nearly capitulated.

It’s gorgeous, and if he had been interested in taking my M11-P, I’d have done it. Hard choice if you are also considering the Q3 though.

Agreed. I think the asking price is probably 10% more than it should be really but there’s no interest in negotiating so you pay your money and take your choice I suppose. 
 

The one I regret missing the most was the M10R black paint body. This would be a good alternative. However I wonder about buying such a beautiful thing and then actually subjecting it to the rigours of real world use. Which is crazy really, but….!

All of us are only ever borrowing these things, if maybe for a good while. If you keep this in mind it all gets a little less precious.

If you want a nice thing to look at on your shelf, that’s fine if you’re honest with yourself about it. If you’re wanting something to make photos with and this will make that harder (as it sounds like it may), then perhaps again another reason for just a stock M10/P. Or, just get the darn thing if you want it and then use the hell out of it, as it is for.

If you're conflicted you can always wait a few more months to see how this plays out in the used market (maybe there will be more M10-P Safaris). If you no longer had the chance to buy the Safari tomorrow, how much regret would you feel?

How much regret? Hmm. Tricky to quantify. Would I need to seek treatment for depression? No. 
 

Would I see a picture of one at a later date and pine for a missed opportunity? Perhaps.
