If you are a Leica subject matter expert, perhaps you can shed light on this model. This camera was my father’s from the mid 1940s. It has taken a licking but it keeps on ticking. (Sorry Timex) this is a Leica classic pop quiz! What can you tell me about this camera? Thank you.

Welcome to the Forum !

Your father had it from mid '40s, but the camera is surely older: as Al Brown says, this is a Leica that was upgraded from model II to model III, a rework made by the Leitz factory and regularly listed at standard price : difficult to say when this upgrade was made... probably before WWII... Anyway Leica Camera Co., today, still can give answers about cameras made in the '30s.... they have almost all "historical" factory records : if you write them asking about Leica nr. 89177, detailing that has the look and specifications of a Leica III, can be that they tell you when the camera was made, where it was delivered, and if the camera came back to the factory for rework/upgrade.

Goodness knows I'm hardly knowledgeable about these things but it MIGHT be that the relase-button for the Elmar lens is of the 'Flat-Front' type. If so then these lenses are quite attractive to those-in-the-know as that particular feature lasted for a relatively short period of time.

Hopefully someone who does know about these matters will chime in soon.

As has been mentioned the camera started out life as a Leica II and dates to the first (albeit rather numerous!) batch so even that detail is a nice thing which goes in its favour.

Nice camera and lens. It should perform - and look - rather wonderful after a CLA.

Philip.

Jonny, just to complete this (approximate) review, could you post the serial number of the lens ? It ought to be engraved onto the black front ring... if in the range of 140-180.000 it was probably delivered together with the original Leica II body; have you some other lens for this camera ?

Thanks for your comments.

Hi Luigi, the serial number on the lens, as I see it, is 134.754. It is definitely worn, but I took a picture under a magnifying glass and can deduce the serial number from looking at the other numbers on the camera. They match up well. This is the only lens I have for this camera.
